Randy Etter loves his dog Gemini more than anything else in the world.

Etter got Gemini when he was just a tiny puppy. Etter raised the dog by himself, and over the years, the two formed an incredible bond.

In April 2019, Gemini was playing with Etter’s girlfriend’s baby daughter. The little girl continuously threw her bottle out of the playpen, and Gemini eagerly fetched it. Each time this happened, Etter quickly grabbed the bottle from Gemini, washed it off, and gave it back to the little girl. Both the little girl and dog were having a blast, and Etter loved watching the two of them play.

Unfortunately, later that evening, Gemini started to get sick.

“He just started to slow down and I didn’t think that was normal, just laying beside me and following me everywhere,” Etter told The Dodo. “I just felt like he was saying, ‘Help me.’”

Soon after that, Gemini started vomiting uncontrollably. That’s when Etter knew something was very wrong.

Etter immediately started driving Gemini from vet to vet, hoping someone could help him. He ended up missing his shift at work and losing his job, but he didn’t care. He just wanted to make sure his best buddy was okay.

One of the vets did an x-ray, and they found the problem: Gemini had eaten the top one of the baby bottles. To save Gemini’s life, the vet would have to surgically remove the bottle top. It would cost $4,500—money Etter didn’t have.

A friend said they would loan Etter $2,000, but it still wasn’t enough to pay for the surgery. Etter quickly realized what he had to do.

Etter was determined to save his beloved dog’s life. And so, when he got home from the vet’s office, he put his car up for sale.

“I was gonna spend every dollar made from the car sale on his surgery,” Etter said. “I would be devastated if I lost my best friend.”

An animal rescue organization named S.O.A.R Initiative (Street Outreach Animal Response) saw the Facebook post, and they were touched by Etter’s devotion to his dog. S.O.A.R. reached out to their members and asked them for donations to help Gemini. The group was able to raise $3,000, which they donated to Etter. Etter was able to keep his car and pay for the surgery.

The surgery was a success, and Gemini is now at home recovering from the procedure. Etter is so glad that his best buddy is doing better.

“It means the world to me,” Etter said. “He’s my best friend. He’s always there for me, I just wanted to be able to return the favor and be there for him.”
