In November 2014, Kat Woodley and Jerad Forsyth met on a blind date. The two fell in love, and after two years together, Jerad decided to take their relationship to the next level by proposing to Kat.
Jerad knew the perfect way to propose: with a kitten!
Jerad and Kat are both animal lovers, and they already had a dog named Shamus. Both of them wanted to add a cat to their family, and Jerad knew adoption day would be the perfect time to propose.
Jerad called the Erie County SPCA and told them his plan. They were happy to help out!
Jerad and Kat picked out an adorable gray kitten named Gandalf. Jerad said he had to work on the day they were going to pick him up, and so Kat went to the SPCA alone. She filled out all the adoption paperwork, but before she took Gandalf home, the SPCA asked if she would take part in a video to promote adoption.
The SPCA workers started filming. Then, one of the workers told Kat that someone had purchased a tag for the kitten, and they wanted her to check it to make sure it was right.
Kat looked at the tag. It said, “Will you marry me?” Then, Jerad appeared and got down on one knee.
“I thought Jerad was at work,” Kat told Metro. “I was very surprised. The SPCA told me they were filming it to promote adoption so I wasn’t suspicious.”
Kat quickly said yes, to both the kitten and Jerad! Jerad put the ring he bought on Kat’s finger, and the beautiful proposal was complete. The SPCA tried to get a close-up of Gandalf’s tag for their proposal video, but the little kitten wasn’t having it! He just wanted to cuddle with his new parents.
The SPCA of Erie County posted the video on their Facebook page, and it quickly went viral, receiving more than 63,000 views. Everyone loved the adorable proposal!
“The reaction is crazy to me,” said Kat. “But Jerad did a great job with the proposal and Gandalf is so cute! I can see why so many people love the story.”
After the proposal, the newly engaged couple and their cat headed home. The cat quickly settled into life at the Forsyths’ house. He loved cuddling with parents, and he also enjoyed hanging out with Shamus the dog.
“He gets along with his older doggy brother and likes to follow him around,” Kat said. “He’s enjoying exploring and playing with his cat toys.”
Jerad and Kat got married in December 2017. Gandalf wasn’t at the ceremony, but he was certainly there in spirit.
We’re so happy that Gandalf found such a great home with a wonderful, animal-loving couple. Congrats to the happy couple and their adorable cat!
