When an adorable baby cow comes walking toward you, you stop and pet it. How could you not?
A Highland calf was as eager as a dog to meet the man in the video below.
So, much so that he walked right up to the man and demanded pets. He started nuzzling the man’s leg like a dog greeting its owner.
The man was extremely amused and began scratching the cow’s head and behind his ears.
The cow was moving his head around to make sure the guy hit all the good spots.
“Oh, that is going to be a problem with those horns on there. Isn’t it?” a man can be heard saying off-camera.
The man petting the cow looks up and seems a little nervous. But that worry quickly melts away when he continues to pet this calf that’s acting like a dog.
It’s actually common for cows to have dog-like behavior.
“If you live on a farm with cows, you may discover that cows can be fun and affectionate, just like your dog. Cows can be playful, they like to be petted, they snuggle, learn tricks and give lickey face kisses!” Wag! explains.
And just like a female dog, mother cows are very protective over their babies. Just as the man was getting comfortable petting the cow, a loud moo can be heard off-camera.
That was the calf’s mom. The man continues to pet the cow but a little more cautiously as the mama cow came into view.
The man continues to pet the calf until mama cow moos very aggressively.
The man stops petting the calf.
The calf just keeps rubbing up against his leg anyway. A few seconds later and we see why this guy is so nervous.
Mama is huge. And she has two giant, very sharp horns on her head.
Highland cattle have long wide horns and long, wavy, coats that have a wooly texture. Their coat is a reddish brown color
A mature female can weigh up to 1000 lbs. Female cows are known to be protective of their calves, even more so than some humans.
“What a mother wouldn’t do to protect her baby right? Cows don’t mess around when their calves are threatened. A mother may lower her head, charge, and headbutt the threat,” Grateful Graze writes.
And this mama cow was running straight toward the man. She slows down when he approaches, and the man reaches his hand as if to let the mama cow smell him.
The mama cow stops and seems cool with him.
She doesn’t seem threatened or angry. That’s when the man goes back to petting the cow. And mom just lets him.
Not sure how or if this man was able to back from the mama cow and her baby safely, but it seems like he definitely made a new friend that day.
