Have you ever had the best plate of food sitting in front of you only to have someone reach over and take something?
Doesn’t that drive you crazy? Imagine how this cat feels. He had his entire dinner stolen by an opossum, and there wasn’t anything he could do about it.
His owners fed him on a plate outside their door, and before he could even start to enjoy it, along came an opossum to help himself.
To be fair, maybe the opossum thought the plate of food was for him? The cat is pretty upset about it, but he doesn’t know how to handle it. He just keeps looking at his owner and wondering why he is snapping photos instead of rescuing his food.
At one point, the cat even gets close the door where his owner is standing and makes a plea for help. When his owner still doesn’t do anything, he decides to take things into his own paws. When the opossum hisses at him, he changes his mind and decides he will just share his food.
According to National Geographic:
“There are several dozen different species of opossum, which are often called possums in North America. The most notable is the Virginia opossum or common opossum—the only marsupial (pouched mammal) found in the United States and Canada.
“Opossums are scavengers, and they often visit human homes or settlements to raid garbage cans, dumpsters, and other containers. They are attracted to carrion and can often be spotted near roadkill.
“Opossums also eat grass, nuts, and fruit. They will hunt mice, birds, insects, worms, snakes, and even chickens.”
Although opossums do prefer to scavenge their food, they can be vicious if they feel threatened.
It’s probably a good idea this cat surrendered his meal. These misunderstood creatures are actually very helpful. They eat ticks and mosquitos, and although they are often said to carry rabies, they are no more likely to have rabies than a pet.
While the pictures of the cat and the opossum were comical, some people pointed out that the owner was only inviting the opossum back by giving him a free meal.
One person said:
“This not funny, next time, that animal will come back when he hungry. Cause no one stops him and your cat favorability will decline. Gd luck.”
Another commented:
“Hahaha, that’s hysterical. That damn thing could eat the cat if he wanted to. Those things are all over.”
Opossums are often caught eating pet food and even eating out of garbage cans.
Many people even find them in their pet food containers. Sometimes, babies are found and assumed to be abandoned. Their parents leave them to hunt for food and usually aren’t gone long. Although baby opossums are adorable, they are also mean. They have been known to hiss, scratch, and bite people who have tried to rescue them.
They prefer to stay away from humans and other animals, which is why they appear to be so sneaky and only come out at night.
They don’t attack other animals unless they are provoked or attempting to protect their young.
It’s not a good idea to feed them, especially in areas where pets also eat. Eventually, this cat and opossum will have to have a showdown over who gets to eat food on the porch. The cat might think it’s going to win, but the opossum will likely come out on top.
Hopefully, the person who made this video will start feeding the cat inside or running the opossum off, so it doesn’t get comfortable there. Eventually, it will leave and find food elsewhere.
