Chuck Hawley was driving to work in Salem, Oregon when he made a startling discovery.
As Hawley was driving, he noticed something in the middle of the road, near a busy intersection. It was only 7 AM and still fairly dark, and so Hawley couldn’t tell what the thing was. At first, he thought it was just a small box.
But when Hawley got closer, he realized it was actually a tiny, five-week-old kitten.
Hawley parked his car and rushed over to the kitten. The kitten wasn’t moving, and Hawley quickly realized why: her feet were glued to the road with rubber cement. There was also rubber cement on her neck and her tail.
Hawley carefully unpeeled her feet, trying his hardest not to hurt her.
The kitten was quiet and let Hawley work—she seemed to realize he was trying to help her. Hawley thinks that someone deliberately walked out into the middle of the road and left the kitten there.
“We were hoping that she had just walked through glue, but it was pretty apparent that somebody had soaked her feet in glue and sort of rubbed it into the pads of her feet,” Hawley told KPTV.
Once Hawley had unglued the kitten from the road, he rushed her over to Silver Creek Animal Clinic. The vets were shocked by this act of cruelty.
“I mean, what can you think when something like that happens? Your first reaction is disgust, and then what could cause a person to do something like that?” Dr. Jenny Bate said. “Somebody put that glue there, I don’t know how or why, but yeah, I mean, somebody did that.”
The vets were able to get the glue out of the kitten’s fur, and the little kitty is expected to make a full recovery. Hawley filed a report with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department—he’s hoping there was a security camera near the scene of the crime.
Thankfully, the kitten’s story has a happy ending. Hawley and his family decided to adopt the kitten. They also thought of the perfect name for her: Sticky!
Hawley told KPTV that he and his family were discussing adopting a kitten just a few days before Hawley found Sticky. It seems like fate brought the two of them together!
“Seems like there’s easier ways for the cat to find us, but if that’s how we’re doing it, okay, I guess that’s how we’ll do it!” Hawley said.
We still don’t know why a cruel person decided to leave Sticky in the middle of the road, but thankfully, the right person found her. Now, Sticky has a forever home with a family who loves her more than anything. If you’d like to learn more about Sticky and Hawley, check out the video below.
