Even the most hopeless of cases deserve the chance to turn their lives around.

This is what a couple from Tampa, Florida, learned after their feline encounter in their garage.

Joshua Hiebert was cleaning up their garden when he saw something on their driveway. The thing looked like a ball of fur huddled quietly against the garage door.

Hiebert approached the thing and realized what it was.

It was an orange kitten that looks like it was just a few weeks old. The poor thing was sitting directly under the sun and on the sizzling concrete because of the intense weather.

“He was in the sun on the concrete,” Hiebert told The Dodo, “And it was, like, 90 degrees outside.”

And if we humans are already having a hard time with that, just imagine the toll on a kitten.

Hiebert decided to take the cat inside.

He first checked the area to see if the kitten’s mother was around. Then, he took a video of the kitten and sent it to his husband Jose Tortolero.

This wasn’t Hiebert’s first encounter with a stray. He knew there were stray cats in their area and he tried to give them food and water, among other things, given the chance.

The little kitten staggered and stumbled as it shuffled into the garage.

It then settled in a corner where it was cool. Hiebert noticed that the kitten was “very weak.” It was too weak to even give them attention.

When they moved, the kitten stayed still. The couple thought that maybe the kitten was just severely dehydrated.

They then gave the kitten a bowl of water.

The grateful kitten, probably thirsty, dipped its paw and kind of pressed it down to the base of the bowl. It was as if the cat was trying to figure out how deep the water was.

It then hit the couple. The kitten was relying on its sense of touch because it was blind. They knew they can’t just leave it behind.

They immediately rushed to the pet store to buy supplies.

They named the kitten Whiskers. They also brought him to the veterinarian where he was given much-needed medication like eye drops, lubricants, and antibiotics.

With each passing day, Whiskers became better and better. He’s still blind, however, but it didn’t deter him to discover the world. They suspect that he could still see blurred outlines as they can see him engage with his surroundings.

They regularly post updates about their pets on their socials.

In one video, you can see a full-grown Whiskers stealing a leaf of lettuce and leaping onto his scratch post.

While the feat demanded depth perception and eye-and-body coordination, Whiskers did it as normally as the next cat would.

It only goes to show that no matter how hopeless a case may seem, given a nurturing and caring environment, anyone can thrive and become the best version of themselves.

Thanks to this couple, Whiskers has found new meaning in life and showed the world the power of compassion and kindness.
