Sadly, animal abuse is still quite common in many households. It’s unimaginable how someone would be willing to inflict pain on an animal who deserves respect, attention, and love, but there are simply some people in this world who shouldn’t come into contact with animals at all.
Many of these animal abuse cases are never made public, but when Melissa Janelle Torrezis witnessed an act of animal violence herself, she did everything she could to make sure the criminal would be punished – and he has finally been brought to justice.
Melissa witnessed an atrocious act of violence when she spotted a man driving on his scooter with his dog on a leash right behind him as he was being dragged on the asphalt by its neck.
The woman immediately took out her smartphone to gather evidence and make sure this pup wouldn’t have to live with his abusive owner ever again.
“Don’t worry I’ll call the cops on you,” Melissa yells in the video. It doesn’t take long before the man replies back with expletives and “Call ‘em! It’s my dog!”
After Melissa taped the footage, she immediately filed a complaint. It was taken very seriously and police in Mission, Texas arrested the man only fifteen hours later. The 59-year-old man was identified as Mario Cardona and then arrested by the authorities. He was rightfully charged with animal cruelty.
Police lieutenant Jody Tittle applauded Melissa’s decision to tape the abuse. “You know something like this is great because somebody actually provided us with video evidence,” he said. “Sometimes animal cruelty is hard to prove, you know, as bad as that may sound.”
Luckily, the German Shepherd mix didn’t have any severe injuries and is doing alright. The dog, named G2, is now in custody of the city’s Animal Control department and doesn’t have to worry about being abused again.
Facebook page Animal Protection R.G.V. provided details about his arrest and first court hearing.
“The DA’s office has charged him with two class A misdemeanor charges related to failing to provide care and recklessly transporting or confining the animal by dragging the defenseless dog from his motorized scooter/wheelchair. Mr. Cardona may face one year in jail and a fine up to $4,000.00 if convicted.
