Just like us humans, dogs can develop fears of the most ordinary of things. For most of us, taking the escalator is a pretty standard part of our day, and it’s something that we do without even thinking. But for one dog, the escalator was the most terrifying thing he had ever laid eyes on.
The sweet Golden Retriever was filmed approaching the escalator with his owner, and the footage was shared onto YouTube.
The video, which now has over 1 million views, shows the Golden Retriever begin to back up in fear as he spots the dreaded escalator. As they reach the steps, the dog grinds to a halt, and despite him being the size of a small child, his owner had no choice but to lift him into his arms.
As the man then mounts the escalator, the dog seems quite happy to sit in his arms as they ride to the top. He just wasn’t a fan of stepping on it himself.
The moment is so sweet that people can’t help stopping and smiling as they watch the dog ride up the escalator in his owner’s arms, and many users took to the YouTube comments to share their love for the video:
“Owner: Come ride the escalator! Dog: You mean that devil contraption that looks like it can grab my tail and make me into pasta?”
“This is me. I always need a friend to hold onto when going on escalators. You’re basically stepping into giant metal teeth. I don’t understand how there aren’t more people terrified of them.”
Well, when you put it like that…
“Dogs should be scared of the escalator. The metal exit claws grab the dogs paws and debone them. Never let your dog on an escalator. Carry the dog like this man did, take the stairs or take the elevator. Seen too many doggies screaming to the top of their lungs because of their stupid owner putting them on the escalator.”
This person actually has a very good point! We’re sure that most dog owners are already aware of this, but for those who aren’t, it’s actually pretty dangerous to take your dog on an escalator.
According to Inside Edition, “Veterinarians recommend taking the stairs or an elevator if you are accompanied by your dog. However, if you have to use the escalator, it is recommended to carry the dog up the escalator — no matter the size of your canine.”
Sometimes, it can be easy to forget that dogs don’t think like us humans do. But no matter how many times they may have ridden an escalator, a dog will still not necessarily know how one works.
“Remember when people take the escalators, they kind of like see where it ends, where the belt ends so they take that step,” veterinarian Dr. Karla Nova told Inside Edition. “Dogs don’t know that belt is gonna end, they don’t know what to do.”
So not only is it totally adorable and hilarious for everyone to watch you carry your dog up the escalator- but it’s actually much safer for them as well! Watch the sweet video below.
