There’s nothing quite like the loving, playful energy of a youngster. Babies and puppies have it alike. Rambunctious and restless are in their nature, but sometimes it can get on even their parents’ nerves.
We’ve got a whole room of retriever puppies here, and their mom coming in to feed them.
They look to be a few weeks old at this point. See all that strength and energy in their paws and legs? They want milk and they’re not hiding it.
But there’s only one of mama and these pups have way too much energy for her to handle right now.
If you’re the slightest bit familiar with retrievers (why wouldn’t you be, seeing how popular they are?), you would know that they’re very mild-tempered. Retrievers are very patient and gentle, and it takes quite a lot to get them a little upset.
And we got to see this retriever lose a bit of her patience thanks to her puppies.
Mama’s on the other side of the gate, with her puppies jumping with impatience on the inside. It’s time to feed them.
There’s at least 7 puppies here, and that may sound like a dream to anyone who loves dogs. But to a mama who’s a little bit tired and cares about her personal space, it can get on her nerves.
They swarm her the moment Mama steps into the enclosure.
She can barely see where she’s going, let alone make it there.
Eventually, the swarming and shoving from the puppies gets on Mama’s nerves and she scolds them with a growl.
“Hey, stop that!” she probably means to say.
She gives them another growl plus a bark to put them back in check. That’s called tough love.
That definitely settled the puppies down and gave mama time to get into a comfy position for them to suckle.
This is a manners lesson, and the little ones would do well to pay attention. For all they know, mama might not let them have any milk next time.
Table manners and respecting personal space are invaluable lessons, after all.
She checks them one by one to see if they’re behaved. After jumping up and swarming her just a minute ago, they’re now all laid down on the ground and silent as can be.
Looks like Mama’s little dose of discipline worked. They’ll grow up to be mighty obedient dogs, I’m sure.
But it looks like some of them haven’t caught onto the lesson yet. They still get up and cautiously try to touch Mama’s tail – to which she gives them another stern bark or two.
Not yet, babies. Not yet! Can’t you see Mama’s getting ready?
It took a little more effort from Mama to get her pups to behave, but they eventually did. So let them have their milk.
Well, I hope they remember the lesson for when they want to drink again in the future.
