There’s no arguing with the fact that moms have one of the most important jobs on the planet. Not only do they bring babies into the world, they care for them when they’re helpless and vulnerable. Without the care of a mom or a motherly figure, none of us would be alive today.
If you think only human moms are awesome, one dog mama is here to prove why animal moms are pretty incredible too. Like humans, a lot of animals’ mothering qualities are instinctive, and they’ll naturally know what to do to keep their babies happy and healthy.
In a video shared to YouTube, the dog mama can be seen carrying her pups one-by-one through a downpour.
According to the person who filmed the incident, the mom had given birth in a springy bush in their front yard the day before. When the rain came, the baby pups became wet and cold, and began to whine. So mom stepped in to bring them all to the safety of a shaded area at the side of the house.
With their sharp teeth, mama dogs have to be incredibly careful when carrying their pups, but this mom does it like a pro. She places the puppies next to each other, where, shivering and whining, they huddle up together to keep warm.
After taking a quick rest and checking they’re all okay, she heads off again to collect the next of her litter.
As mom carries each of her pups to safety, we soon learn how vocal they all are! They waste no time in making loud squeaks of protest while they’re in mom’s mouth.
It’s likely that they’re unsure what’s going on, and don’t realize that they’re being brought to safety. They’ve only been in this world for a short time, after all, and probably can’t yet distinguish between good and bad.
It seems like the mama dog is going to run back and forth in the rain forever, but finally, she drops off the last pup in her litter and begins licking her babies to warm them up. She truly is an exceptional mom – despite being soaking wet herself, she puts all of her attention on her pups first.
She curls up behind them, nudging them into position, and one of the hungry pups begins to feed. She continues to care for her little ones, washing them and making sure they’re comfy against her.
Though we’re not sure what happened to the mom and her pups after this video, it’s likely that she had been taken in by the person who had been filming her. But her display of strength while living as a stray mama caught the attention of millions of people online, and the video currently has more than 5 million views.
People had plenty to say about the video, too, with one person writing:
“God love her, what a sweet, good Mama she is! I do hope that little family ended up getting the help they needed!”
Many people also commented that they were angry that the person filming hadn’t taken mom and her pups inside, but we don’t know the story. Perhaps mom was showing signs of aggression, or the person had called for a rescue team who were on their way. It’s easy to judge without knowing for certain.
