Shannon Ackerman is a dog rescuer from Missouri City, Texas. In April 2018, Ackerman rescued a Husky and her two puppies from a drainpipe. As she was heading home with the pups, she stopped to get gas at a Texaco station.
Little did Ackerman know, a German Shepherd had been abandoned at this gas station right before she arrived.
The German Shepherd seemed to sense that Ackerman was an animal lover, someone who could help her. And so, the scared pup approached Ackerman as she was pumping gas.
When the German Shepherd reached Ackerman, she gently licked her knee to say hello.
“As soon as I started pumping gas, I felt something lick me on the back of my knee, which scared me,” Ackerman told The Dodo. “When I looked down, this sweet, sad German shepherd, who appeared to have just had a litter, was looking up at me with a look on her face like, ‘Can you please help me?’”
When Ackerman examined the dog, it became clear to her that the dog had just had puppies. Ackerman was shocked—what kind of person abandoned a mother dog at a gas station?
“The gas station was pretty packed, so I asked really loudly, ‘Is this anyone’s dog? Did one of you dump this poor baby?’” Ackerman said. “Of course, nobody said anything.”
The dog cried and whined, desperate to get into Ackerman’s car. But since Ackerman already had the Husky and her puppies in the car, she couldn’t take the German Shepherd. Ackerman wanted to help the poor mama dog, so she told her friend and fellow rescuer, Whitney Hartman, about the pup.
Hartman was still at the site where she and Ackerman had rescued the Huskies. Since it was so close by, Hartman was able to quickly drive over to the gas station and pick up the German Shepherd. The pup was so happy to get away from the gas station!
“She jumped right in with no coaxing,” Hartman said. “She was so happy to be in the car.”
Hartman took the dog home and gave her the food and water she badly needed. Then, Hartman contacted Sauver Des Cheins, a local German Shepherd rescue group. They arranged a foster home for the pup. They also gave her a name: Mercy.
The next day, Hartman drove Mercy to her foster home and said goodbye. Mercy quickly settled into life in her new home, and she loved her foster parents. But even though she was happy, she still clearly missed her puppies.
“We are still actively searching for her puppies and any information that might lead us to them,” Courtney Manske, communications director for Sauver Des Chiens, said. “We’re scouring Craigslist and Facebook … looking for whoever might be rehoming them.”
No matter what happens, Sauver Des Cheins will make sure Mercy goes to the right forever home. After all this dog has been through, she deserves a wonderful home with people who love her!
