We can all agree that animals live more happily in their natural habitat than in zoos.

It goes without saying that they prefer running free in the Savana or in the jungle, rather than living in captivity and being perceived as “exhibits” for humans to see during a day trip.

However, there are zoos that really take good care of the animals they host.

Sometimes, they even save them from what could have been a deadly situation if there were no vets around.

Like the chimpanzee in Sedgewick County Zoo, who gave birth to her third baby the other day. Unfortunately, her labor came with complications and that’s when the zoo staff came into play.

As the zoo staff explained, Mahale was in active labor for quite some time, and at some point, the doctors decided that it would be best for her to have a c-section.

Baby Kucheza was having trouble when he was born, so he had to be taken by the veterinary team to be observed, until vets would decide it was safe for him to be reunited with his mother.

Mahale returned to her enclosure after the c-section, and eventually, Kucheza was transferred to an enclosure right next to her, where she could see him but not have more contact with him until it was perfectly safe for the newborn.

Two days later, Kucheza was healthy enough to be fully reunited with his mom.

The zoo staff placed the newborn in an enclosure, wrapped in a blanket. Moments later, they brought Mahale in to see her baby.

Initially, the mama chimp seemed to have no idea what was going on. Maybe she hadn’t even realized what was in that blue blanket.

As she moved around to take a better look, Kucheza stretched his arm and the mother realized it was her newborn baby who she was now reuniting with.

Mother instincts hit and she rushed to grab him and hold him tight.

Mahale was clearly crying tears of joy as she was finally holding her baby in her arms for the first time.

But she was not the only one crying at the scene. The vet who was capturing the whole thing on video was crying as well.

The woman didn’t miss the chance to praise the mama chimpanzee for doing a “great job”.

“It’s one of the most powerful things I’ve ever seen. She knows it’s her baby laying there. The baby is being very still, she’s looking at it like, ‘What’s going on,’ and once he moves, you see the relief and the love and just, oh my gosh, it’s just amazing. As a mom myself, it’s just, oh my gosh,” the zoo’s communications director, Jennica King, told FOX TV Stations.
