Bowie had been stuck in the Whatcom Humane Society’s shelter in Bellingham, WA, for more than a year.

It was quite the affair when he finally got adopted. So much so that Bowie even got the red-carpet treatment fitting for the superstar that he is.

The shepherd mix is a special dog that charmed shelter staff members the day he walked through their doors.

Every employee and volunteer at the Whatcom Humane Society completely fell in love with Bowie.

“He was really, really sweet,” Andrea Merrill, Whatcom Humane Society’s development associate, told The Dodo.

Bowie had gotten several adoption applications, but none of them were a good fit for Bowie. He even had some sleepovers but would end up back at the shelter.

No one at Whatcom Humane Society could understand why Bowie kept getting sent back to the shelter.

They later learned that Bowie likely preferred to stick around for a very good reason. He was waiting for “the one.”

Bowie had been hanging around the shelter for about a year when a local college student named Audrey heard about his story and started keeping tabs on him.

“She was utterly in love with him, but it wasn’t the right time,” Merrill said.

But eventually, that time did come. Audrey went back to the shelter to put in an adoption application as soon as she graduated and was situated in her job.

“It’s very much a ‘the right person found the right dog’ situation,” Merrill said. “And everyone here at Whatcom was so excited for Bowie to start this new chapter.”

The folks at Whatcom Humane Society wanted to make sure that they had a proper send-off for Bowie and pulled out all the stops.

There were handmade posters with loving messages of well wishes for Bowie, balloons, and a bubbled-laced red carpet.

Everyone cheered as Bowie came out and walked down the red carpet toward the door where his new mom was waiting.

He seemed a bit confused about what all the fanfare was about and didn’t realize that it was because he was so loved. While the staff was sad to see him go, they were so happy he had his very own home.

“Everyone was in tears, but we were all so excited and just so happy for him,” Merrill said. “It was a really sweet way for us to be able to say goodbye to Bowie.”

Bowie and his new mom Audrey are very happy together.

“She just absolutely adores him,” Merrill said. “And Bowie’s so, so happy.”

They spend their days hiking and snuggling up on the couch.

“In the two short weeks since he joined our family, Bowie has settled in quite nicely. He LOVES to sleep under my bed every night, despite having multiple beds around the house. He also likes to take some naps on top of my bed during the day,” Audrey said in a message posted on Whatcom Humane Society’s Facebook page. “He is the sweetest, most mellow, lovely dog and he has been a perfect addition to our home,”
