Messy and Audi are best friends. They’re even lucky enough to live across the street from one another in their town in Thailand but they had never had the chance to play together – only stare longingly across the road.
Audi’s owner is often gone long hours for her job, leaving the pup lonely and a little anxious.
So when Messy’s owner, Oranit Kittragul, noticed that the dogs were interested in one another but Audi seemed lonely, she would let Audi out into the fenced-in yard so the dogs could at least communicate with one another.
“When [Audi] feels lonely and cries, I always ask my dog to see and talk to him,” Oranit told The Dodo back in 2017. “My dog just looks from my fence and sometime he barks to [Audi]. I don’t know what they are communicating, but he stops crying.”
The dogs went viral shortly after because of a very sweet set of photos taken during what could have been a scary moment.
In 2017, Audi’s owner forgot to latch the gate one day and the Husky escaped.
But he didn’t run away. At least not very far.
Audi only made it across the street. The only freedom he wanted was the freedom to go visit his friend Messy, so he made a beeline for his house.
“He ran to my dog and they hugged each other,” Oranit said.
The woman also took some photos of the tender moment that melted hearts.
And yes, dogs really do make attempts to “hug” – and they do it to both humans and to one another.
Just look at these two!
It’s not always best for humans to hug back since that can make them feel smothered, but accepting a hug from a dog is certainly on our list of things we enjoy most!
While the photo was taken in February of that year, social media is a strange thing, so it took a few months for their sweet story started spreading around the world. They’ve even been featured in news publications with international audiences.
Kittragul told TODAY she was surprised the photos made the impression they did.
“My purpose is just to share a nice photo and story,” she said.
As for Messy, the sweet yellow lab seemed relatively unimpressed by his newfound fame.
“He’s an animal, I don’t think he will respond to this spotlight,” Oranit joked.
Luckily, the owners of both dogs appeared to be amenable to the friendship and were making plans for the dogs to be able to play together more often.
But even by mid-July of that year, the humans hadn’t found time to make it happen yet. After all, life can be busy!
But Oranit did take Audi for some walks by the house so they two could sniff at each other a little more closely.
“Not yet,” Kittragul said of the potential playdates. “But sometimes I bring Messy to visit Audi in front of Audi’s house.”
They may have been separated by a fence for quite some time, but that certainly didn’t get in the way of their blossoming friendship!
While it’s one of many stories that remain unfinished, we’ll choose our own happy ending and assume these two became BFFs and in-person playmates.
