Sara had always dreamt of owning a cat, but with her boyfriend Brent’s severe cat allergy, she had put her dreams on hold. Once the couple made the big move from Minnesota to New York, though, the woman was feeling lonely without a feline companion.
In an interview with Girls and Their Cats, Sarah said, “I had always wanted a hairless cat but never thought it was a realistic possibility since the breed is so rare and can be wildly expensive.”
After the couple’s big move, the search for a new feline friend began.
For Sarah, however, it felt rather fruitless. Finding a kitty that could satisfy her desire for a hairless cat but also not trigger Brent’s allergies was not easy.
But finally, after three long months, perfection appeared in the form of Loki, a uniquely wrinkled hairless Sphynx.
Loki is a rather unique looking cat— and as luck would have it, he was exactly what Sara and Brent were searching for.
Sphynx cats are not actually hypoallergenic— but they are often recommended for people with cat allergies, like Brent. And, because Loki was hairless, he was the perfect match for Sarah too! When the couple discovered Loki, they knew they had found the cat of their dreams.
“Loki is incredibly affectionate, cuddly and chatty. He loves napping on our bellies, eating chicken and scrambled eggs and receiving hearty head scratches.”
“Brent and I are completely and wholeheartedly enamored with him.”
Sphynx cats are fairly underrated in the feline world. They’re known for being intelligent, playful, sociable, and friendly— but most of all, they’re extremely loyal to their owners. In fact, Sphynx cats have actually been ranked the most affectionate breed of cat— which definitely solidifies the old saying to never “judge a book by its cover”.
According to Cat Time, Sphynx cats resulted from a random genetic mutation. A Toronto woman named Elizabeth came about a hairless kitten named Prune and quickly set about trying to reproduce the kitten’s unique looks. “[Prune], along with other hairless kittens that were born in the late 1970s, was bred to furred cats, including the Devon Rex,” the website says. In the end, because the gene for hairlessness is recessive, some of the cats’ offspring were hairless, while others had fur.
Nowadays, Sphinx cats, also known as Canadian Hairless Cats, are recognized by multiple cat associations across the world. Bonus fact: the most popular Sphynx cat is named Mr. Bigglesworth, a character in the Austin Powers film series.
Despite Loki’s slightly grumpy looks, he is a super loving kitty. Sure, he’s wrinkly and may look a little mean… but Sara and Brent, and his 65,000 Instagram followers, clearly think he’s something special.
When it comes to photographing the wrinkly kitty, Sara lets her creativity loose— and, as you can see, he makes a (hilariously) perfect model.
“Loki has helped me return to creative and optimistic parts of myself that were misplaced while I was feeling unmotivated and sad,” Sara said.
“Animals are incredible healers, and I am eternally grateful for Loki’s companionship and generous loyalty. He is truly one of a kind.”
Loki is so incredibly unique and different! He’s living proof that amazing cats don’t always fit into the typical definition of “normal”.
This wrinkly guy is truly loved by his humans, and, by all accounts, has no problem giving that love right back.
“This cat has more personality and sass than any animal I have ever met.”
“We are inseparable,” Sarah said. “We are best friends.”
