When we think about household pets, the top two animals we have in mind are cats and dogs.
These are the most common pets people have. You can add fishes, birds, hamsters, and rabbits to that.
Others have farm animals to look after just like they would with domesticated animals.
Some people love to take care of horses, donkeys, cows, chickens, and even pigs. Usually, the grown-ups who love farm work consider these animals as pets. However, it is rare for a child to opt for farm animals as pets over cats or dogs.
Miley loves her pet pigs, Gizmo and Bentley.
According to Arlene, Miley’s mother, they first had Gizmo as a pet. He would only go near and respond to Miley and no one else. Their strong bond was evident from the get-go.
On the other hand, Bentley was a rescued pig.
He came from a breeder, and someone got Bentley from him. Unfortunately, that person decided they didn’t want the pig anymore. Arlene said that Miley begged her to take Bentley in. After all, they already had Gizmo, and Bentley might love the company.
It was a struggle at the beginning as Bentley didn’t trust them at first.
He was very distant and distrusting. He would often stay away from any human around him and even Gizmo. But this didn’t discourage Miley. Instead, she continued to stay with Bentley, sleeping beside him at night to assure him that he was safe in their home.
After a month, Bentley slowly broke out of his shell.
It turned out that this little piggy was more outgoing than Gizmo. He loved taking walks with Miley and their cat (and little sister), Oakley. They often go out and have a mini picnic in an open field.
Miley trained both of her pet pigs as if they were dogs.
They know the basic tricks such as ‘sit’ and ‘turn.’ She also trained them with plastic cups to distinguish colors and play peek-a-boo with some treats inside. Miley has such high regard for pet pigs that she treats them like her younger siblings.
She also took them to school for Show-and-Tell.
You could see how passionate she was about pigs and quashing the stereotype that pigs aren’t smart. She created a presentation to shed light on how pigs are intelligent animals and that one could take care of them as a household pet.
This presentation sparked a lot of interest among her schoolmates.
Some asked questions about how she loved Gizmo and Bentley and cared for them. Most students were also very enthusiastic about petting and doing some tricks with their special visitors. The two piggy boys can’t complain because they had all the treats they wanted for being such good boys.
Miley’s parents, Arlene and Stephen, didn’t mind their daughter’s choice of pets.
Like any other pets, they said that it was like having two toddlers running around. It required a lot of checking on them from time to time, making sure they didn’t break or ruin anything.
What’s important for them is how happy Miley seemed with Gizmo and Bentley.
