Losing your best friend is one of the toughest things a person can endure.

Especially when we had the privilege of growing up with a pet, we form a bond so apparent yet so immeasurable. So when we lose our pet, we inadvertently lose a part of ourselves to grief and pain.

Unfortunately for this six-year-old boy from Lubbock, Texas, he had to experience this kind of pain firsthand and at a very young age. It was a moment that taught him resilience, love, and most of all, hope.

Kahne Williams lost his dog Kase.

“On Dec. 4 our dog Kase went missing,” Paula Williams, Kahne’s mom, told TODAY.com. “We let him outside to go to the bathroom and when we went to let him in he was gone. My son cried and we went searching up and down the street, but couldn’t find him.”

What started as a mundane afternoon became a heartbreaking evening as Kase showed no signs of coming back. Even if the family tried to look for Kase, their efforts were all in vain.

To make matters worse, a blizzard hit their area.

The whiteout left close to 20 inches of snow. That kind of weather can be unforgiving to humans, what more to animals who can’t find shelter.

What little hope Kahne and his family have dwindled as Kase’s chances to live sharply plummeted with the sudden turn of events. Days turned to weeks, and weeks into a month. The family eventually had to move on.

Until a miracle happened.

Paula was driving back home after dropping her son off at his grandmother’s place. She stopped behind a school bus and watched two girls get off. That’s when she saw their dog, Kase.

“I saw two little girls get off and then saw Kase run up to them. So I pulled in and said, ‘That’s my son’s dog.’” She shared with TODAY.com.

If it was not for the foster family, things could’ve been worse.

The family said the dog came into their house. They took care of him since then. They fed Kase, gave him a place to stay for a while as fate worked its way for Kahne.

They didn’t specify if the dog was found before, during, or after the terrible storm but Paula was thankful.

“If they wouldn’t have taken him in we don’t know what would have happened.” She said to TODAY.com.

After a long month, Kahne was reunited with his best friend.

In a heartwarming video posted by Paula, she shared the moment when Kahne laid his eyes on Kase. She said that she has a surprise for her son and beckoned him to come closer. Kahne was not expecting what’s on the back of the car. The moment he laid eyes on his dog, you can feel his heart drop and unfurl.

“Kase?” you can hear him call out. He hugged his dog tightly as if making up for the hugs they lost the past month. The dog was as excited, though, and gave Kahne some overdue kisses.
