One April day, five-year-old Jose and his mom were taking a nap at home. But when his mother woke up, her son was nowhere to be found.
Jose’s mother believes that Jose must have opened the door and wandered away without her noticing.
But, thankfully, little Jose, who has Down Syndrome, didn’t go outside alone. The family’s German Shepherd, Alejandro, followed him and didn’t leave him alone even for a second.
Soon, Sgt. Salas of the Houston Police Department heard that a boy was wandering by the train tracks, and got into action.
“This morning we got several 911 calls of a 3 year old boy walking on the railroad tracks with a dog alone. When I arrived, I carried the little boy and tried asking him questions. I could tell he had Down syndrome,” Salas wrote on Twitter.
The man explained that he approached the little boy and, after asking a few questions, he took him inside his patrol car in order to get the air conditioner on.
Ohh my God y’all, I have to tell y’all this incredible story. This morning we got several 911 calls of a 3 year old boy walking on the railroad tracks with a dog alone. Of course, the dog followed making it clear that he wouldn’t leave Jose alone.
“This dog was his protector and his angel. The dog would not keep an eye off the little boy. It was the greatest thing to see this animal so loyal,” Salas tweeted.
As Salas was having a chat with the little boy, trying to understand where his house was and how he had ended up on the street, the dog didn’t leave their side.
“We called the Houston Fire Department to come check the baby out and guess who followed? Yup, the German Shepherd,” Sgt. Salas went on, on Twitter.
A little less than half an hour later, Salas received a call from 911 telling him that a mother had reported her son missing. It was obvious that the call was about little Jose.
Judging by where the mother lived, the police realized that the boy and his dog had walked half a mile before they were spotted by people.
As for the German Shepherd, it was obvious that he knew there was something wrong with this adventure, so he had to follow the little boy and protect him if he had to.
“It seems like to us that the dog knew something was up, he knew that the child wasn’t supposed to be wandering off and he ended up following him,” Salas told Houston Cronicle.
As the boy’s sister explains, Alejandro has always been overprotective of Jose, and she was not surprised that he wouldn’t leave his side the whole time.
Jose was eventually reunited with his family.
The police said no charges would be filed against the family, but his mother would make sure to put protective locks to prevent such a thing from happening again.
How lucky Jose was to have his guardian angel next to him during this adventure.
