When it comes to lazy dogs, many breeds really take the cake. But sometimes an energetic breed will display lethargic signs that can befuddle their owners. Exhibit A: This Golden Retriever is known for wild and energetic play, but not today, nor any day when it’s time to leave the park. This playful pooch turns into a non-moving rug of golden hair when his owner says it’s time to go.
Anyone with a toddler knows how emotional they can get when it’s time to leave the park. And that is exactly what we’re witnessing in this video.
No matter what the owner does, this dog isn’t moving. A tug on the leash, rolling the old dog over, massaging his legs, all nice tries but this lazy boy is not going anywhere.
How can such an energetic breed go beyond his nature and turn into a puddle of mush, refusing to move?
Good Housekeeping has compiled a list of laziest dog breeds, and the Golden Retriever is not on it. According to American Kennel Club, Goldens “take a joyous and playful approach to life and maintain this puppyish behavior into adulthood.”
That sure doesn’t look like a description of this dog? What’s going on here? Does the owner need to change his dog’s diet?
What lazy dogs are on that Good Housekeeping list? Rising to the top of the list is the Bulldog. And AKC backs them up saying …
“Bulldogs are mellow and are happy to relax next to their owner’s feet, but they also enjoy an occasional romp and going on walks.”
Next on the list is the Saint Bernard. GH says, “Their calm and patient disposition also makes the gentle giants a great ‘nanny dog’ for kids.”
Maybe this Golden Retriever is channeling his inner couch potato and taking influence from legitimate lazy dog breeds.
The owner tries everything to get this old gal up and running again. He rolls her over, he pumps her legs, he pulls the leash. But nothing works. And the owner does all of this with such a calm demeanor. He’s chill and relaxed with his dog.

“I know how she feels. I do the very same thing when my wife wants to go to the mall.”

If this Golden Retriever is not one of the laziest dogs, then there’s something going on here that warrants an investigation. Good Housekeeping has another article that lists the smartest dog breeds, and low and behold Goldens are listed at number four.
This is a classic Ah-ha moment! This Golden is not really lazy, but more likely super smart. She doesn’t want to leave the park where she lives her best life. She is pretending to be lazy, so she can stay longer.
That must be why the owner is so completely at ease with his dog turning into a puddle of mush when it’s time to leave the park. He knows how smart his dog is and he probably experiences this in some form most every day.
Smart dogs can go to any length to get what they want. But smart owners have figured out ways to outsmart man’s best friend. Whether it’s the whiff of a treat or a favorite toy, many owners have discovered how to get their dogs up and moving.
This owner uses the old tried and true stick trick. He shows the stick to the dog and lets her play with it for a bit. Then when the dog is hooked, you toss the stick and the dog will forget everything she had planned and do what dogs do … she chases that stick.
This owner is obviously well versed and trained in this ultimate distraction technique. If you have a similar smart dog, make sure you take notes, as we are watching a master at work.
So this Golden is super smart and not actually lazy. That changes everything about this video on second watch. Now when you watch it you’ll see how impressive this Golden really is.
