Some dogs are just born heroes. We know the type. They are willing to sacrifice themselves for the human that they care so much about, all for the sake of love. Whether it’s warning humans about a fire in the house or fending off a wild animal, dogs are often the heroes that save the day!
Dogs do more than save humans, too!
Our furry friends have an incredible capacity for cross-species empathy (something that humans could use some more of). Science Daily concluded in a study:
The study therefore provides evidence that dogs not only feel empathy towards people, but in some cases also act on this empathy. This happens especially when they are able to suppress their own feelings of distress and can focus on those of the human involved. According to Sanford, this is similar to what is seen when children need to help others. They are only able to do so when they can suppress their own feelings of personal distress.
Knowing that, this story makes a lot of sense!
An incident involving a few dogs shows us how caring and heroic dogs can actually be! It all started with two dogs playing around a river. Doing doggy things and having a blast frolicking, they didn’t have a care in the world.
Strangely, an empty canoe drifted by on the water.
The two playing dogs stopped to watch the canoe nearing the shore. Suddenly, they jumped in, hoping to make a toy out of it! With both of the dogs in the canoe, the current suddenly swept the boat away.
The fun moment turned to panic.
After the initial leap, the dogs soon realized that they weren’t near the shore anymore. Then they realized they were being swept away down a river. Then the panic set in. The fun little game turned into a terrifying and swift journey!
They look terrified as they think of a way to get out of the sticky situation.
Right when the boat starts to really leave, something incredible happens! A black lab leaps into the water and starts swimming in the current towards the two trapped dogs. After a desperate struggle, the lab reaches the edge of the boat.
What happens next is amazing.
Once the lab got to the edge of the boat, the two dogs inside threw out a rope! Taking the rope in his mouth, the lab paddled back towards the shore with the entire canoe in tow. Slowly but surely, he inched towards the beach.
Stepping onto the shore, the lab dragged the canoe on the sand.
Like a superhero, the lab simply shook his fur out and looked as happy as could be! A nearby human went to check on the two dogs in the canoe, but the danger of the moment was mostly over. A random black lab just dragged a canoe to safety in the middle of a river!
If we didn’t have a video to prove it, it would be hard to believe.
The impressive sight goes to show just how amazing dogs really are. They are natural heroes and are always looking for ways to make their humans happy. If you don’t have a dog, get one! It might pay off one day.
