Pets are a part of our family. Sadly, they can be abandoned for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, people can feel like it’s the only solution. Maybe a family member has an allergy and there isn’t anywhere else for the pet to go. Sometimes, people are forced to move and can’t bring their pet with them. Sometimes, the animal exhibits behavioral problems the owner was not prepared for. And other times? Well, other times the reason is completely unknown…
This past month, a woman was driving late at night when she noticed something fly across the street. It moved too quickly and independently to be a leaf or piece of rubbish, so she decided to get out and take a look.
When the woman got closer, she realized the creature was a tiny kitten. She then noticed the mother cat was sitting beside a box nearby. When the woman started approaching, she was stunned to find three more kittens hidden inside.
The weather was very cold, and the babies were huddled together trying to stay warm. It was clear the tiny family would never be able to make it in such harsh conditions, so the woman stepped in to help.
She brought the kittens to the RSPCA, who released the following statement: “It was below freezing on Saturday night [in Birmingham, England], so I’m certain the poor kittens could well have perished if they’d not been found by this lovely lady.”
“They’re only a few weeks old and are extremely vulnerable.”
The mother cat was named Disco, and her, along with kittens KP, NikNak, Pringle, and Skip, were sent to the Newbrook Farm shelter where they would be housed.
It’s so sad that someone was willing to abandon this cat and her babies outside and alone in the cold. While there’s never a good way to leave your pet behind, this manner somehow seems unusually cruel.
Herchy Boal, an inspector with the RSPCA, said in the RSPCA’s statement, “We’re in the midst of a spell of extremely cold and treacherous weather, so for someone to decide to abandon a mother cat and her kittens in this is just despicable.”
Authorities will be investigating who abandoned the adorable felines, and the appropriate charges will then be laid. Unfortunately, the practice of abandoning pregnant cats and unexpected litters is extremely common. In this case, with the freezing temperatures, the situation could have been decidedly worse.
Luckily for these adorable kittens, the loving woman arrived right in the nick of time. Now, thanks to her actions, they are happily housed and waiting for their loving, forever homes.
