In 2017, an experienced foster mom named Ronda took in a cat and her litter of kittens. Unfortunately, the mother cat was very stressed, and she stopped caring for her babies. Only two of the kittens survived—two male cats named Cocoa Bean and Pinto Bean.
Ronda brought the mother cat back to the shelter, where she was spayed and adopted into another home. Then, Ronda turned her attention to the two remaining kittens. Pinto Bean was doing well, but Cocoa Bean was having a hard time surviving without his mother. Even though Ronda bottle-fed them around the clock, Cocoa Bean was still fading away. The kitten badly needed warmth and comfort.
Ronda decided to introduce Cocoa Bean to her gentle pit bull mix, Zuca. As soon as she placed Cocoa Bean next to Zuca, the kitten started to come back to life.
“Once Cocoa Bean got a feel of that black, shiny coat and felt Zuca’s warm embrace, he realized how much the world had to offer,” Ronda told Love Meow. “All of my kittens love Zuca, but these two had a very special bond with her. I absolutely credit Zuca with saving Cocoa Bean’s life.”
Cocoa Bean and Pinto Bean began spending most of their time snuggling up with Zuca. Pinto Bean was thrilled that his brother was okay!
Pinto Bean and Cocoa Bean spend the next few days curled up at Zuca’s side. The sweet dog became like a surrogate mother for the two little kittens.
Once Cocoa Bean was healthy, Ronda began looking for a permanent home for him and his brother. Since they were a bonded pair, Ronda knew they needed to be adopted together.
Ronda soon found the perfect home for the kitten brothers. The kittens said goodbye to Zuca and went to live with their loving new family.
A year later, Cocoa Bean and Pinto Bean are doing great!
They spend their days running around the house, playing together. Afterwards, they often curl up for naps in their mom’s lap.
Zuca is also doing very well. She’s acted as a foster mom for many more kittens in need, including a sweet little black kitten named Lamb Chop.

Zuca is an incredibly patient pup who’s helped tons of kittens who needed love, warmth, and comforting. Zuca is a truly amazing dog!
