For about five years, Eryn had a unique visitor – a blind raccoon believed to be around the same age.
This raccoon had a peculiar condition affecting its tapetum lucidum, causing its eyes to shine a bright green during the day.
Eryn said, “His eyes shine bright green during the day. He is at least partially blind. He walks into things. He is afraid of the wind, high grass, birds, and snow.”
Despite his visual impairment, this raccoon managed to survive by scavenging and seeking food.
Eryn observed, “He is out and about during the day. He comes to our house for food early in the morning usually around 6-9AM.”
The raccoon had a routine of returning for seconds and sometimes even thirds.
Due to a missing bottom lip, Eryn fed him soft pasta noodles soaked in cream of chicken soup and small pieces of hot dogs, ham, pork, etc., as he refused canned cat/dog food.
Eryn believed the raccoon didn’t have rabies or distemper, as it’s not unusual for raccoons to be active during the day, and he would have succumbed to these illnesses if he had them.
The raccoon always seemed to be alone until one day, he arrived with some unexpected companions.
These new friends weren’t fellow raccoons but two little black kittens.
It appeared they had formed a mutual relationship: the kittens acted as his bodyguards, and in return, the raccoon showed them where to find food.
Eryn explained, “They would magically appear when he would come for food. So they figured out that Blind Raccoon = FOOD.”
After the raccoon and the kittens had their fill, the cats would escort their blind friend back into the woods.
This unusual friendship caught the attention of many.
Sadly, the raccoon passed away after living several years longer than the average lifespan of his species, which is typically about two years.
Eryn reflected on his remarkable survival, saying, “A blind/handicapped raccoon surviving at least five years is a pretty long time. He was a miracle.”
The kittens were understandably saddened by the loss of their raccoon buddy.
Fortunately, Eryn was there to comfort them and eventually earned their trust.
She decided to keep the black kittens, adding them to her family.
Eryn shared a touching personal connection with the kittens, saying, “Turned out that I needed the black kittens as much as they needed me. Taming them helped me slightly cope with the loss of my mom and my 15-year-old cat within nine days of each other.”
Eryn honored her mother’s wish, who, before falling ill, expressed a desire to keep the kittens warm and safe.
So, Eryn did just that. Now, the kittens live with her and her other cat, Squirt, forming one big, happy family.
While they all miss their raccoon friend, they cherish the fond memories of his companionship.
