Being a mother is hard work— and some cats, like some humans, aren’t ready for such a big responsibility. It’s not rare to hear stories of mama cats abandoning their young to fight for themselves. Sometimes the kitten is sick and mom wants to be able to save the others; other times she may be too young to really understand what is happening. Whatever the case may be, some poor kittens find themselves roaming this savage world completely by their lonesome.

That was the case with this grey-and-white fluffy kitten that was found hiding behind a giant, truck wheel.

The kitten didn’t seem to realize it was in danger of getting squashed. She was more curious about the human who had discovered her clever hiding spot.

In a post on the /r/Aww subreddit, user AnotherGoodGuy describes how he and his husband rescued this adorable baby from the street.

“Husband saw the mama cat (a stray who has lived in the office park parking lot for 2 years or more) running away, and saw two little white boots under the truck by the tire,” the user said.

“This photo was when he kneeled down to look.”

He already knew he’d be taking her home.

After scooping the cute-faced kitten from underneath the truck, the couple took her home and named her Axel. They still aren’t sure why she was abandoned by her Mama, but JustAnotherGoodGuy jokes, “Given the way the kitten gnawed on the bottle when we first got her… the mama may have run her off for chewing the hell out of her nipples.”

The couple welcomed Axel into their home and immediately brought her to the vet. Although they had thought she was a boy, they soon discovered they had a female feline on their hands.

“That’s how we found she’s a she,” JustAnotherGoodGuy explained. “Got shots, the whole new kitten package. Then we had to wean her. She was only 4-5 weeks when found.”

Axel is completely content in her new home and loooves the humans that found her. Despite being born outside, for the most part, she seems happy snuggled right on the couch.

“She really hasn’t shown a lot of interest in going outside,” the user explains.

“She knows she’s found a good thing.”

Thanks to her new humans, Axel is 100% happy at home. And who knows what would have happened to this little babe if one caring man hadn’t noticed her fluffy boots peeking out from behind a parked truck’s wheel.
