Hope for Paws founder Eldad Hagar has seen animals in lots of sad situations during his years as a rescuer. But even he was shocked when he learned someone had thrown a tiny kitten onto the highway outside Los Angeles. He couldn’t believe someone would be that cruel.
Hagar learned about the kitten from a woman named Sheila. Sheila sent Hagar a text, saying she had seen the kitten standing in the freeway’s fast lane.
It was clear the kitten needed help quickly, and so Hagar another rescuer, Loreta, headed over to the highway.
The first thing Hagar and Loreta had to do was figure out how to get to the kitten. There was no safe place to park right next to kitten, and so they ended up parking on the shoulder on the other side of the highway. They grabbed the equipment they would need to catch the kitten and carefully started walking across the highway.
Amazingly, all the cars stopped for them, and no one honked. It seemed like everyone understood these two rescuers were doing important work.
Hagar and Loreta approached the kitten from two sides. Then, fast as she could, Loreta reached down and grabbed the kitten. He didn’t struggle as she picked him up—he was so happy to be safe.
Kitten in hand, Hagar and Loreta crossed the highway again. Then, they walked as fast as they could to their car.
Once they were safely in the car, Hagar called Sheila back to thank her for her help:
“You’re incredible, you know that?” Hagar said. “I don’t know how you spotted him, but we just stopped the freeway completely, to a complete halt, and we got the kitten.”
Hagar and Loreta rushed the kitten to their rescue center, where they fed him. Then, they began treating his eye infection and gave him a flea bath.
At first, the kitten was too scared to even meow. But soon, he found his voice. The little kitten started coming back to life!
Hagar and Loreta decided to name the fierce little kitten Napoleon.
As the weeks went by, Napoleon kept getting stronger and stronger. He also made friends with a sweet little orange kitten named Cricket. This little kitten had been trapped in a wall, and he was found by a kindhearted couple named Melany and Mike Gomez.
One day, Melany and Mike came to visit Cricket at Hope for Paws’ shelter. They ended up meeting Napoleon that day, and they fell in love with both him and Cricket. The couple decided to adopt both kittens!
Cricket and Napoleon love their forever home and their parents. These two cats both went through some immense struggles, but they’ve now found a great place to call home!
