Some relationships between humans and their pets are truly extraordinary, transcending the usual bonds of companionship. One such special bond is that between Scott and his German Shepherd, Biggie.
Their story shows the unique connection that can form between a pet and its owner.
Scott’s journey with Biggie began on an ordinary day when he decided to take a drive through the small farming town of Payette, Idaho.
A sign advertising “German Shepherd puppies” caught his eye.
Having recently lost his own German Shepherd, Scott was drawn to the prospect of some puppy love, despite not initially intending to adopt another dog.
Upon seeing Biggie, Scott was instantly smitten. Biggie, who had several health issues including a hernia, was one of the last puppies left to be adopted. But Scott didn’t mind these issues.
He saw past them and fell in love with Biggie, deciding to take him home that very day.
“I want to give him the best life that I can,” Scott told GeoBeats Animals. And indeed, Biggie’s life with Scott is filled with joy and adventure.
The mountains are Biggie’s happy place, and together they enjoy hiking, swimming, snowboarding, and skateboarding.
Biggie also loves to run freely in wide-open fields.
Biggie’s exuberance is evident in his play. Whether he’s happily bounding through the snow while Scott snowboards, or running around freely during their hikes, his joy is palpable.
Biggie is also an excellent listener, his large ears always alert to the sounds around him and to any commands Scott might give him.
Despite his size, Biggie is still very much a puppy at heart.
He loves playing with a small ball, which Scott says Biggie treats like a pacifier.
“If you give your dog the best life you can, in turn, you can have the best life you can have as well,” Scott shared, reflecting on their bond.
Scott also credits Biggie with helping him overcome depression. “It gives me the will to get out there and see things and do things,” he said.
However, their relationship isn’t without its challenges.
Caring for Biggie requires a significant commitment, including at least two hours of exercise every day to manage Biggie’s energy levels.
Biggie faced a serious health scare when he was hospitalized for fluid in his lungs. After three days in the ICU, Biggie made a full recovery.
This incident served as a stark reminder for Scott never to take things for granted.
Their bond is truly unique.
“I feel like I can go out and do anything, as long as he is with me,” Scott says.
From being an unwanted puppy to becoming someone’s best friend and family member, Biggie’s journey has come full circle.
While not everyone can have a bond as special as Scott and Biggie’s, adopting or fostering a dog can undoubtedly change your life for the better.
