There are countless animal lovers in the world.

Hundreds of millions of people own pet cats and dogs, and many others help stray and abandoned animals by volunteering in shelters.

However, no matter how much a person loves animals, not many would risk their marriage for one.

Mike Enders is one of those rare people. He risked his marriage to save a three-legged cat.

This story started when Enders saw a post of Zorro, a stray three-legged kitten. The post also said that Zorro had to be out of the shelter by that day because the staff was starting to euthanize kittens.

Enders told The Dodo that he was staring at Zorro’s photograph when something remarkable happened.

“This is going to sound crazy, his eyes were like – Mike! Come and get me!” Enders said.

He decided that he would get the cat, no matter what.

Next, Enders looked up where the shelter was located. He learned it was about an eight-hour drive away.

Enders lived in San Francisco and the animal shelter was in Palm Springs.

Although he was second-guessing himself and wondering whether he was acting crazy, he still got into his car, ready to save Zorro.

He left San Francisco at 7 a.m. and arrived at the shelter in the evening.

Despite the long ride, he made it to Zorro’s side and picked up the kitten.

“I’m excited, I’m nervous. Part of me thinks I’m insane. But when I saw his face and I saw that there was a possibility that he might be euthanized, there’s something in my gut that said, go get this boy,” Enders shared.

After he picked up Zorro, he turned around and drove straight back home.

All in all, the whole roundtrip from San Francisco to Palm Springs and back again took almost 20 hours. He got home at 3 a.m.

Enders brought Zorro home to foster him at first. However, Enders soon realized that he already loved Zorro like his own.

But there was one problem.

His husband was adamant that they were not getting a third cat because Enders already had two pet cats.

So, he hesitantly put out a message online announcing that Zorro was available for adoption.

He secretly hoped that no one would respond because he was already very attached to the cat.

His husband continued to tell him that they couldn’t keep Zorro.

After the fourth time his husband reminded him that they weren’t keeping the cat, Enders agreed with him even if he knew deep down he wouldn’t be able to let go of Zorro anymore.

“So Zorro, he’s worth it, and he’s putting my marriage on the line! It sounds ridiculous, but it’s true. I don’t care,” Enders said with a laugh.

Fortunately, Enders’ husband began warming up to Zorro and falling in love with him too.

When they brought Zorro to the beach, they bonded. Zorro also often slept beside Enders’ husband.

Enders’ announced that Zorro had found his forever home with him and his family.
