On a night in May of 2015, Deputy Todd Frazier’s life was forever changed.
Todd Frazier was on patrol when he came across a car stopped at the edge of the road with all its lights turned off.
Concerned someone may have had a medical emergency or needed help, the deputy stopped to perform a welfare check.
Frazier got out of the patrol car and approached the darkened vehicle.
He could see the silhouette of a man sitting, but when he got closer, a rustling could be heard from the woods.
As soon as Frazier got close enough, two men charged out of the bushes, heading straight toward him.
Knowing his life was in danger, Frazier tried to retreat.
Unfortunately, he tripped and fell as he backed away.
The three men then jumped in to attack.
“The deputy tripped and fell to the ground as he was backing away from the vehicle,” said Glenn Grannan, chief investigator with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
“That’s when all three male subjects, including the driver, ambushed him, cut him on the forehead with a sharp object and dragged him into the woods.”
Later, Frazier described the incident, saying: “I had three people on me, and I’m not a very big man. They basically whipped my butt.”
Luckily, Frazier had a remote-control device to unlock the back door of his patrol car— and, on this fateful night, he had brought Lucas, his K9 partner, along.
When Frazier managed to activate the button, Lucas ran toward the attackers, giving them the surprise of their lives. “He knew [something was wrong],” Frazier said. “I could hear him coming.”
“I couldn’t see anything because the blood was all in my eyes, but I could hear him coming, growling and making all these sounds.”
“He sounded like a wolf.”
“I thought, ‘Now he’s gonna get you.'”
The brave Belgian Malinois rushed onto the scene to rescue his partner.
After taking a large chunk out of one of the assailants, he scared them all away.
“That’s why he’s my hero,” Frazier told a group of children during a talk organized by the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League.
Unfortunately, the suspects were not apprehended, and it’s unclear what motivated the attack.
But with Lucas’s help, Frazier was able to walk away alive.
According to reports, the suspects fled in a car with big rims and obscured license plates.
Frazier was treated for stab wounds, which doctors suspect were from a box cutter.
Lucas, for his part, broke all canine and incisor teeth.
A muscle also detached from the left side of Lucas’s neck during the struggle, and he tore an ACL.
Reports say he’s recovering well and is set to return to search and rescue, the field he was originally trained in.
“He’s multi-talented,” said Frazier.
“He can do a lot of things.”
“He would put his life on the line for me. He is a deputy; I would die for him too.”
Frazier’s story was covered by a ton of national media outlets.
Lucas received the Brookhaven Animal League Rescue Hero of the Year award and was even recognized by PETA.
Since being uploaded to YouTube, the story has been viewed thousands of times.
