This next story is a sad one but with a happy ending.
Gidget was a senior horse who lived an isolated life.
The person who owned her was an elderly man who couldn’t care for her well. He could only dump oats down a chute straight into her feed bin.
“I don’t think she had seen other people, let alone other animals in at least ten years,” Jonell of Mockingbird Animal Farm Sanctuary told GeoBeats Animals.
Mockingbird Animal Farm Sanctuary takes in farm animals who are neglected or surrendered.
Her elderly owner used to have a herd of horses, but they all had died or were sold, leaving Gidget as the only horse left on his farm.
Gidget was rescued from this lonely life by Mockingbird Animal Farm Sanctuary. When they got to her, they found her in the barn’s basement all alone. The rescuers had to cut down weeds just to get to her.
Jonell said that when she arrived at her new home, her eyes lit up and she was so happy to be there.
The staff members weren’t sure who Gidget was going to spend time with at the farm.
Then they saw an unlikely friendship blossom between Gidget and Peggy, another horse rescue they received from the Humane Society.
Gidget and Peggy had stalls beside each other, and every time they went out, they would touch nose to nose.
The two horses were always together, going out and running together.
Gidget was older and couldn’t run as fast as Peggy, but she would always watch Peggy run around her.
They couldn’t be apart even during veterinary and medical care. The two horses would stay beside each other while the other was getting treated. Gidget and Peggy stayed together as often as they could.
Gidget enjoyed her life at the farm, playing in the mud with her hoof, which made them call her “the mud pony.”
They celebrated Gidget’s 30th birthday and threw her a beautiful party.
The other farm animals also celebrated with her, wearing party hats and having fun.
Sadly, Gidget passed away at 30 years old.
“It was so heartbreaking. We laid Gidget down in our memorial garden,” Jonell said.
Jonell walked out with Peggy to show her that Gidget had passed away and the pony knew that something was different. She was distressed and backing up. Jonell said that Peggy knew Gidget had died.
Even though Mockingbird Animal Farm Sanctuary only had Gidget for about a year, they were able to give her green pastures to run in, and more importantly, a best friend.
Peggy took Gidget’s passing away hard. She would stand in front of Gidget’s halter where her scent lingered and wouldn’t leave.
Peggy also stayed in front of Gidget’s stall waiting for her friend to come out.
While no other animal can replace Gidget, we hope Peggy has found a new friend on the farm.
We’re grateful that Gidget was able to spend the last year of her life enjoying a new environment and spending time with her best friend.
