Dogs are such wonderful animals, so loyal and loving, always there to greet us with a wagging tail and happy face when we get home each day.

Sadly, even though many dogs find the happy families and forever homes they deserve, there are an awful lot of strays out there, struggling to survive, risking their lives each and every day.

Some get caught and taken to pounds and shelters, ready to be re-homed, but others walk the streets and roam the cities, sometimes finding themselves in very dangerous situations! That’s exactly what happened to one little Beagle named Buster.

Buster was walking along a busy Missouri interstate and got struck by a car that was going at around 70 MPH.

The driver just carried on going, but one kindhearted man had seen the whole scene unfold and wasn’t prepared to simply leave the dog to die.

That man was Aaron Schneider, an Iraq war veteran.

Schneider pulled over and ran across three lanes of traffic to get to the dog, putting his own life on the line in the process!

When he arrived at Buster’s side, the injured pup was a little frightened and defensive. Schneider wanted to pick him up and carry him off the road, but Buster didn’t seem to like that idea.

So the brave vet had to improvise. He cleverly and carefully coaxed the dog off the road to a safe spot, before calling 911. The operator told him to wait for animal control workers to arrive.

So Schneider waited and waited. The rain poured down around him, and he and Buster were sitting there for three whole hours, but no animal control officer arrived on the scene.

Seeing that the dog was severely injured and in desperate need of medical attention, Schneider decided he couldn’t wait any longer!

He called up his buddy, asking him to drive over so that they could take Buster to the vet.

Fortunately, by the time Schneider’s friend arrived, he’d managed to gain Buster’s trust and was able to pick him up, using a makeshift stretcher to load him into the truck.

From there, they rushed to the nearest clinic, Blue Pearl Veterinary in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

“My combat lifesaver training kicked in and I’m thankful I was able to use it to help him,” Schneider explained in an interview, “Having served in Iraq, you see a lot of loss, which is one of the reasons I was determined to see him make it.”

Arriving at the clinic, Schneider was told that Buster, who was believed to be 5-years-old, had a few broken ribs, a torn windpipe, and some internal bleeding too.

Fortunately, even though his injuries were quite severe, the vets expected him to make a full recovery, thanks to Schneider’s heroic efforts.

If he hadn’t stopped to help, Buster would never have made it. Not only that, but after the veterinarians failed to find an owner for the dog, Aaron offered to take him home, giving him all the love and care he deserves and giving this story a wonderful happy ending too!
