A gutter is no place for a dog. So when a neighbor found one in the gutter, they knew they had to do something.
In the streets of India, a street dog was found trapped inside a deep sewage canal. The gutter narrowly fitted her. It didn’t give her much room to move, let alone to climb. More than that, the gutter was reeking and flowing with sewage so nasty, the liquid is unrecognizable in its shade of black.
Nevertheless, she stayed down there, shaking and frozen in place.
No one knew how she got there or where she’s from. All they just knew was she needed help. The locals called Animal Aid Unlimited, an organization working to treat the stray animals of Udaipur.
Their organization sent a team of volunteers to check the situation.
To ease the frightened dog, one of the volunteers stroked her fur. Just by her posture and expression, they knew she was under a lot of stress. They carefully lifted her out of the gutter so they can check her properly. They found out that she has multiple puncture wounds and was completely limp. If she was left there longer, she could’ve died.
The dog was so weak she didn’t put up a fight when she was being carried away.
Fortunately for her, this was the end of her ordeal. Or at least, that’s what we all thought.
Once she reached the organization’s clinic, they noted her rapid breathing. They believe that the dog was in shock and they have to help her immediately. The treatment started on IV fluids and other medication, just so they can stabilize her.
By morning, her situation improved and she was decked for a general check-up.
Much to their relief, the dog wasn’t suffering and fractures. Although, she had a lot of puncture wounds that needed to be cleaned. All throughout the treatment, the members of the animal rescue organization gave her the utmost care. They even stroked her fur to calm her down while she’s being bandaged.
On her second day with Animal Aid, she was still too weak to stand.
They had to hold her upright and use a special bottle just to feed her. She was well behaved, though – cautious but appreciative of how she’s being cared for.
By the third day, they saw a brand new dog. She might be scared and wrapped, but it was a different energy and a different thirst for life. Chickpea, as she’s now called, began eating by herself.
When she recovered her strength fully, Chickpea now runs around the shelter.
She was found hurt, frightened, and weak. But now, she has grown to love cuddles. She even plays and wrestles with other dogs. She would happily lie on her back just to get some good belly rubs. And she’s always curious about what this world has to offer.
This goes to show that a little kindness goes a long way. Good-hearted people are still around, we just have to know where to look.
