Having a pet is not just about showing your friends how adorable they are.
These relationships are built on acceptance, trust, and responsibility. So when two unidentified people left a husky on the side of the road, people were confused, angry, heartbroken.
In a video clip shared by ABC 7, an SUV pulls over to the side of the road in El Paso, Texas.
A young man was seen removing the leash of a husky. The dog, meanwhile, might have thought they’ll just take a walk on this rather different route.
The husky curiously explored the side of the road. Then, with the dog being at a good distance, the SUV sped off. The confused husky, not knowing why his owners were driving off without him, tried to run after the car. The car didn’t slow down.
He doesn’t know it yet, but he just got abandoned.
Luckily, Joy Dominguez was just a car away from the SUV. She took the video of the act, even catching the car’s plate numbers. In Texas, pet abandonment is considered animal cruelty. As a Class A misdemeanor, suspects could face up to a year in county jail or a $4,000 fine. Dominguez called the authorities and filed the case report.
This heartbreaking story, however, won’t end on a sad note.
The video gained a lot of traction online, with people expressing their anger and disbelief.
People rallied against the suspects and left comments to condemn the act:
“I seriously cannot imagine how that poor baby must have felt being abandoned like that. Broke my heart into pieces. These shameless people should face jail time for doing this. So heartless.”
The husky was then brought to a veterinarian and was confirmed to be in good health. After that, he was put up for adoption by an animal rescue group.
In less than 24 hours, his life changed for the better when a family took him in.
Barabara Valencia of Huckleberry Hound Dog Rescue in El Paso said:
“They (the family) reached out and said they would love to give the puppy a wonderful home. We vetted them very quickly. They passed all of the criteria and so they were able to pick him up yesterday.”
The Clappsaddle family knew they had to give the husky a new forever home, especially when they saw what he had to go through.
They named him “Nanook” after the Alaskan malamute dog in the 1987 movie The Lost Boys.
Maddie Clappsaddle shared how heartbroken she was when she saw the video of Nanook being abandoned. She said to ABC 7:
“When I saw the video and I saw him run after the car, it just made my heart feel like broken – but now that he’s running around and he’s happy, I feel very happy and excited.”
After being left out in the desert, the lost boy Nanook isn’t lost anymore. He has found a home in this loving family and was given a second chance to be the kind of dog he has always wanted himself to be.
