A dog meat farm in South Korea kept 149 dogs in small cages. These dogs were destined to be killed and eaten during South Korea’s Bok Nal summer season. But before these poor dogs could be killed, Humane Society International intervened.

Humane Society International rescued all 149 dogs from the dog meat farm, and they got the farm to shut down!

HSI gained access to the farm from the farm owner himself. The farmer asked HSI to help him close down his dog meat farm. The owner is planning on abandoning the cruel dog meat farming industry, and he hopes to begin growing crops instead. HSI will help him with his business plan, and they’ll also periodically check in with him to ensure that he has not begun keeping dogs again.

HSI’s rescue team flew to the farm, where they were overwhelmed by the stench of feces and garbage. They made their way to the small, cramped cages that the dogs were held in. The farm had a wide variety of dogs, from large mastiffs to miniature poodles to Korean Jindos. HSI doesn’t know for sure where these dogs came from, but they suspect that some were strays taken from the streets. Others may have been stolen from their homes, while others were possibly dropped off by their former owners.

HSI plans to send the dogs they rescued to Humane Society shelters throughout the United States, where they’ll hopefully find new forever homes. The only exceptions are fifteen puppies who are too young to fly. These puppies will stay with their moms in foster homes in South Korea until they’re old enough to fly to the United States.

On their Facebook page, HSI shared a video showing some of the sweet pups that they rescued:

Dog Meat Farm 9: Closed for Good.Thank YOU for helping us change the fate of more than 130 dogs who were trapped on this South Korean dog meat farm. The facility has been closed FOR GOOD. No dog will suffer, trapped in these cages, again. Your compassion has given these dogs a second chance at life.

This farm is the ninth dog meat farm that HSI has shut down since 2014. Altogether, they’ve rescued almost 1,000 dogs from these cruel farms. HSI is also trying to encourage the South Korean government to end the dog meat industry altogether. Nara Kim, HSI’s South Korea dog meat campaigner, says:

“With every dog meat farm we close, we are not only saving the lives of these poor, terrified dogs caught up in this cruel trade, but we are also presenting a successful blueprint for change that we hope the government will follow. Eating dog is a dying practice in Korea, especially among young people. However, the Bok Nal days of summer still lead many to eat dog meat soup in the mistaken belief that it will invigorate the blood in the sluggish heat. Our campaign shows them the disgusting conditions in which the dogs are forced in live in their own feces, and their pitiful suffering, and it is changing hearts and minds.”

HSI has done amazing work saving dogs on dog meat farms from a cruel fate. Now, the pups that they’ve rescued will get to go to good homes with owners who love them. If you’d like to help HSI save more dogs from the horrific dog meat industry, consider donating to their organization.
