Responsible people will do just about anything to make their pets happy. But sometimes, their actions annoy, confuse, and even anger dogs. These are the top 20 things that humans should avoid doing.
1. Head pats
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people get this wrong. Of course, they love it when a head pat comes from their beloved owners and people they’re familiar with. However, when a stranger reaches down to pat a dog on the head, they usually feel scared or nervous, which can change their normal behavior. In these cases, it’s important to check with the owner first so that he or she can direct your interaction with the dog.
2. Irregular schedule
Dogs need routine. We all know this, but, sometimes we get busy and wonder why our pup is acting a little out of character. Whether taking a dog for a walk or feeding it dinner, people should always maintain a consistent schedule. Even a difference of 30 minutes can affect their mood.
3. Too much hugging
Yes, dogs love to be hugged but too much of a good thing can be bad. Excessive hugging can make a pup feel anxious or even fearful.
4. Staring
Staring at your dog is one thing but when a stranger does it, your pet would likely feel challenged. They dislike it so much that in some instances, they could become aggressive.
5. Being sad
Dogs can sense when their owners are sad. That’s when they try to help with licks and cuddles. But if someone is sad for any length of time, these animals begin to feel frustrated and helpless.
6. Not enough playtime
Regardless of age, dogs love to play with their humans. If a pup doesn’t get enough attention, they can become depressed and destructive.
7. Teasing and mocking
While that might sound strange, it’s true. Dog’s don’t like it when people tug on their tails, bark at them or tease them with a toy or food. Doing those things could lead to behavioral issues.
8. Loud yelling
When a dog does something bad, a lot of people start telling. But that only instills a sense of fear in them. For these animals, positive reinforcement works better.
9. Not taking fear seriously
If your dog shows fear for something, you need to take it seriously. Even something as simple as a bath can be traumatic so be patient and understanding.
10. Tugging on the leash
Since dogs get excited going for walks, it’s common for them to pull on the leash. But as they do that, their owners usually pull back. Correct this by purchasing a longer leash, training them, or using a harness.
11. Rough play
It’s important to play with your pup but be careful that roughhousing doesn’t go too far. During playtime, if your dog becomes overly excited, end the session.
12. Dress up
Putting clothes on a dog because they have little hair or they don’t handle the cold well is one thing. But dressing them up in outfits just because you think it’s cute isn’t a good idea. Amazingly, they get embarrassed.
13. Shooting off fireworks
For many dogs, fireworks are traumatizing. Every year, dogs go missing during the Fourth of July. You can still celebrate but not anywhere close to your animals.
14. Forcing socialization
Rather than forcing your dog to socialize with strangers, ease them into meeting new people. This is especially important for certain breeds like the Pitbull. Being forceful could cause your dog to react negatively.
15. Demand they perform tricks
People love to have their pets do tricks. But unless the animal performs as a business, this is probably something best left for home. The goal is to make performing fun and rewarding for the animal, not something they feel pressured to do.
16. Treating them like a baby
This includes things like tossing a dog in the air, cradling it on its back, and even taking it for walks in a stroller. We love our pets but doing this prevents them from being, well, a dog.
17. Leaving them alone
If you work outside of the home, consider having two pets so they can keep each other company. Otherwise, show your furry friend a lot of affection before leaving and when returning, and to leave plenty of toys out.
18. Putting them in harm’s way
It’s a human’s responsibility to ensure the safety and protection of their dog. You want them to feel secure at all times. An excellent way to accomplish that is by eliminating any potential risks.
19. Rushing their walks
It’s important to allow dogs to enjoy time outdoors. Make walks a part of your routine. Pups benefit from this both physically and mentally.
20. Be more careful with odors
Considering that a dog’s sense of smell is exceedingly greater than a human, they notice things we don’t. To keep your pet happy, either avoid or use sparingly things like vinegar, ammonia, and chili peppers.
