The Great Danes are just about one of the sweetest breeds around. Their owners attest that their greatest joy is in being cuddled and hugged. They are also the best friend to many babies. However, do not let their docile personalities fool you. They may act very sweet but they are built for the big leagues.
With an average weight of 175 pounds in weight, they are definitely unable to fit in your tote bags. Here are 45 lovely pictures that show just how big Great Danes really are.
1. A Helping Paw
Great Dane Lily might be blind, but she has her own seeing-eye dog named Maddison who takes her for walks! This is just more proof that despite their impressive size, Great Danes really are just big softies at heart. If these adorable photos are anything to go by, it’s clear that Lily puts all her trust into Maddison and it’s so adorable to see.
2. Time For A Nap
Is there anything more adorable than seeing a picture of a child cuddled up with a dog? Despite Edna’s head being twice the size of her human sister’s, the pair have the sweetest bond and often snuggle up together. We have to admit- a dog’s back is a super comfy spot for taking a nap on and beats a pillow any day!
3. ‘Louis Made A New Friend…’
This dog has been trying to figure out how one of his patches managed to fall off onto the floor for the past hour. His paws are so huge that he could squash the little kitten in an instant- but despite their size, these dogs are truly gentle giants and would never hurt a fly! We’ve got to admire kittens for their (arguably dumb) amounts of courage, though. This little guy is at least ten times smaller than his Great Dane friend, yet he can’t resist going in for a cheeky swipe with his paw. They don’t say cats have nine lives for nothing.
4. Selfie Time
Some people train their dogs how to sit, beg, roll over, and all the usual tricks, but one Reddit user decided that his dog was better off learning a much more useful skill: “I trained my Great Dane to take selfies with me – if I’m sitting and extend my arm with my phone in hand, she plops up next to me, leans, and gives the camera this look.” Well we have to say that we think she’s totally mastered it!
5. “My graceful Great Dane, Hendrix.”
We have to admit, we’re very impressed with this picture. Despite Hendrix’s interesting choice for a chew toy, we’re blown away by the flexibility that he’s showing off here. We’re not sure if this dog came as a kit or not- but if so, we think he was assembled wrong. He’d make a great circus contortionist though!
6. “I have the REAL Scooby Doo”
We thought that Scooby Doo had gone quiet for a few years, so it’s nice to see that he’s still alive and well. In all seriousness, though, this adorable pooch could give old Scoobs a run for his money! According to his owner, they were off to a costume party, and the spots had been painted on with face paint. We can only hope that his owner went as Shaggy to complete the duo!
7. “Say Hello to my Little Friend…”
If there’s ever a picture that looks photoshopped, it’s this one. We knew Great Danes could be big, but just imagine having this guy sat next to you on the couch! We bet he eats more than the entire family put together.
8. “One Day You’ll Be Big Just Like Me”
It took us a minute to figure out that this big guy is absolutely terrified of his puppy friend- so much so that he’s cowering on top of the couch to get away from him. This just goes to show that attitude is not always proportional to size, and proves our theory that big dogs think they’re little and little dogs think they’re big. What an absolute softie!
9. “Look at My Ball!”
Most dogs are happy with a tennis ball or two, but Great Danes always have to take things that one step further. Although we’d question whether this is a full-sized basketball, it’s certainly bigger than a tennis ball. What an impressive talent!
10. An Unlikely Friendship
Apparently, Pippin, a helpless baby fawn, was abandoned by her mother on the property of Isobel Springett. Isobel’s Great Dane, Kate, adopted Pippin immediately and they have been best friends ever since! What an amazing bond.
11. A Different Kind of Majestic
We know all too well that not every picture taken of us is going to be our best- especially the candid ones. Sometimes the camera catches you at a bad angle or at just the wrong moment, and you can end up looking -well- exactly like the hilarious pooch above. In this case though, the action shots are some of our favorites. We can just picture this sweet boy running happily through the fields and living his doggie best life.
12. The Look of Surprise
According to the owner, her Great Dane puppy makes this face every time she takes carrots out of the fridge, and we’re determined to know the context behind it. Is he afraid of the carrots- or are they his favorite snack? What’s more, can we talk about the fact that a Great Dane puppy is about the size of a fully grown standard dog? Incredible!
13. This Dog Appears to be Melting
This dog is beginning to realize the consequences of leaving something out in the mid-day sun on a black surface- and with the thing being him, there’s not much he can do about it now that he’s half melted. Hopefully his owner comes and scoops him up pretty soon.
14. 4-Month-Old Great Dane Pup
This majestic boy looks almost statuesque as he poses for his picture. We have to admit that we’ve never seen fur so silky-looking before, so it’s no wonder he’s looking proud! We’re genuinely curious about what conditioner he uses…
15. “Cutest Great Dane Mom And Puppy Picture Ever.”
The pink paws! The little tummy folds! The contented look! There’s so much cuteness in one picture and we’re struggling to deal with it. The best thing about dogs is that they really know how to live in the moment and be happy. Just look at how relaxed this little guy is!
16. An Instant Bond
According to a Reddit user, their son “talked us into going to the animal shelter saying he wanted a small dog ….. worth it for that smile.” You know you’re raising your children right when they make adorable requests like this one! We love how he asked for a small dog, yet the family ended up leaving with one of the biggest dog breeds in the world. Sounds like a fair compromise.
17. “She firmly believes she’s a lap dog…”
This is a case of, ‘If I fits, I sits…..and if I don’t fits, I also sits’ and the results are hilarious! This affectionate pooch just wants to cozy up on her mom’s lap like she’s seen her brothers do- and nothing is going to get in the way of her making that a reality. We wonder how heavy she is?
18. “My Dane Loves Listening To My Nan’s Stories.”
Have you ever seen a picture more wholesome than this? We love how the pooch has perched himself on the couch in the exact same way that his owner’s nan has! What a truly special bond.
19. Paw to Hand Comparison
Believe it or not, this paw belongs to a four-month-old Great Dane! We’re genuinely curious as to if the owner has small hands- because otherwise, this pooch is going to be huge! People weren’t lying when they said Great Danes were big.
20. Fast Asleep
A Reddit user shared this pic with the caption: ‘my sister caught her new Great Dane puppy sleeping like this’, and we’re beyond jealous that we didn’t get to witness this cuteness in real life! Though we have to admit, we’re kind of reminded of a time long before lockdown began when we were trying to sleep on a flight and there just wasn’t enough room for all of our body parts. Anyone else?
21. Best Friends
This 6 month old Great Dane may be over 90lbs but he’s still bffs with his cat sister, despite the impressive size difference. Though we have to say, we’re not sure that the cat is totally feeling the love here. Great Danes really have no idea how big they are!
22. “The Reaction I Get When I Tell Him To Get Off The Chair.”
This dog looks like a distinguished old gentleman with a British accent, and if he could talk he would certainly be saying, “Karen, I hear what you’re saying and I appreciate your strong feelings on the matter. I’m happy you feel comfortable enough in this relationship to express yourself. But this is my chair, and I refuse to give it up.”
23. Bigboye Decided This Couch Belongs To Him
Imagine having a dog so big that he takes up the entire couch? Forget about dog beds, this big guy needs a human sized bed! What’s more, prepare for your mind to be blown because it turns out this horse -sorry- dog, is only eight months old. Have you ever seena puppy quite like this?
24. Silver Fox
A Reddit user posted this sweet pic with the caption: “My old girl Darma. She’s a 10-year-old great Dane, but no one has told her yet. Her eyes may be cloudy and hip a little stiff but her heart is as big as ever.”
Old dogs are truly the best. They’ve lived a long and happy life and still have all the love in the world to give! Just look at that gorgeous little face.
25. “Our 9 1/2 year old Great Dane Pearl by the fire last night…she was shivering so she got a blanket!”
There’s something about old Great Danes that makes us believe that they have more wisdom than an owl. This old girl looks like a wise elder or mystical wizard, or maybe even a Jedi. The force is strong with this one.
26. 13 Beautiful Years Old
Apparently, Lady the Great Dane has just been given a clean bill of health from the vets despite being 13 years old- and old age has never looked so good on her! With a Great Dane’s life expectancy being around 8-10 years, this old girl is a trooper! We hope we have some of those good genes.
27. “My Great Dane puppy, refusing to come inside.”
The paws on this little guy give a good indicator of just how big he’s going to grow! If this dog could talk, he would be saying: “Do I really have to come in? But it’s so nice out here. Look at my paws. See my paws. I’m going to be a lap dog, even at 120lbs.”
28. A Few Weeks Old
This pup may be small and cute now, but give him two weeks of growth and he’ll be around three feet tall (though still cute.) He has to be one of the sweetest pups we’ve ever seen. We’ve never wanted to cuddle a puppy so much!
29. The Goodest of Boys
According to a Reddit user, this is Buck, “a 10 week old Great Dane pup. He has now mastered the sit command and is now part of the good boy club.”
What a clever pup! Though to us, he’s always been a part of the Good Boy Club.
30. “Been a long time lurker and Finally got the Great Dane I’ve always wanted, meet Jäger.”
We wonder if the owner called his dog this name so that he could become the Jäger Master? At three months old, this sweet pup is already around 38lbs, so we can imagine that he will be taking up the entire backseat in no time at all! Those floppy ears are our favorite.
31. “Flashback to our Great Dane named Barry when he was a puppy.”
After seeing this adorable pic, we strongly believe that everyone needs a Barry the Great Dane puppy in their lives. He may be chewing on some shoelaces but that face is totally precious. These dogs could get away with murder.
32. “My 7 month old son and Great Dane are best friends.”
There is no bond quite like the one between a small child and a dog, and this cute pic gives us baby fever and puppy fever all rolled into one! Some say that this snap is actually a shot of Scooby and Shaggy in their younger years, and we have to agree! The pair already make a great team.
33. “10 weeks old Great Dane (Remy).”
Remy has to be one of the most beautiful pups we’ve ever seen! With that silky soft fur and light blue eyes, we reckon this Great Dane pup should have her own modeling contract! Though she may have to have her shoes specially made, as she already wears a size twelve sneaker.
34. Play Time
The caption of this hilarious snap sums it up perfectly: ‘A funny and gawky Great Dane puppy leaps in a gangly, funny way for a ball tossed to it.’ Great Danes may not be the most elegant of dogs, but how can they be with those long legs? Besides, their awkwardness makes them all the more loveable.
35. “My 5 month old Great Dane puppy broke social distancing protocol to see my brother.”
Now, this is definitely some rule-breaking that we can get behind. Despite being just five months old, this Great Dane pup is almost the same size as a grown man! Besides, how lovely is it to see Scooby reunited with Scrappy?!
36. “I Adopted a Great Dane Puppy!”
Were we the only ones who were totally unaware of just how cute Great Dane puppies are? The lucky new owner recently brought home this little gem and asked for name suggestions in the comments box. What would you name her?
37. “8 week old great dane puppy”
This pup could easily be mistaken for a black lab puppy- that’s until you notice his feet. We’ve heard of dogs growing into their ears, but Great Danes grow into their feet! How adorable.
38. “My new friend ‘Beast’ the Great Dane.”
We’ve never seen a more appropriate name for a dog, though we can guarantee that Beast’s gentle personality won’t quite match up with her name (or her size!) Still, Great Danes are the exact height for taking selfies, so they’re the perfect companion really.
39. “My sister is driving 10 hours back home with the Great Dane puppy she just got.”
This pup is making sure that her owners know exactly how she feels about a ten-hour car journey- and to be honest, our feelings would be similar! By the time they arrive back home, this Great Dane puppy will probably have grown another couple of inches at least. Lucky she’s in the backseat!
40. “Crouton the tortoise keeping warm with some Great Dane pups.”
Now here’s a pic you’ve probably never seen before. Who knew that tortoises were a fan of cuddling up with puppies? Though if we were Crouton, we’d do the exact same thing.
41. “Meet Hamilton the Great Dane pup.”
We’ve never seen a puppy with two different eye colors before, and we’re living for it! Hamilton looks absolutely gorgeous, and we’re sure that he’s going to grow up to be a handsome old boy. Oh, how we wish we could give him a cuddle.
42. Animal Love
Apparently, the poster’s cat wasn’t the best with other feline friends, but when she met her Great Dane brother, an instant friendship was formed!
The Reddit poster said: “My cat has been staying with my mom recently and he has had issues getting along with other cats so I was worried about him with her dogs. But, apparently, he’s fallen in love with her Great Dane.”
This just goes to show that they’re impossible not to love!
43. A Happy Ending
“Just got this little guy,” a Reddit user posted. “He’s 6 months old and a rescue. He was skin and bones when my in-laws got him, but he doesn’t get along with the dogs out on the farm and they can’t keep him at their house in town long term, so we agreed to take him. My wife has wanted a Great Dane for years anyway.”
He looks so much healthier already! Besides, everyone knows that what the wife wants, the wife gets.
44. “My daughter and our Great Dane Zoe. This is normal, my daughter is obsessed with ZoZo.”
If you need proof of how gentle Great Danes are, then just look at this picture! These two look absolutely adorable together. Who says that dogs shouldn’t be around babies?
45. Snuggles With The Babies
This Great Dane owner has been blessed in more than one way- she’s also pregnant! She’s 26 weeks, and it seems that the sweet dog understands that there’s a baby in her tummy, as he hasn’t left her side all week! Just look at those protective eyes.
