In November 2014, animal rescue organization Rescue From The Hart received an urgent call about a homeless poodle who had been hit by a car in South Los Angeles. Rescue From The Hart’s founder, Annie Hart, and her friend and fellow rescuer Eldad Hagar immediately jumped into Hart’s car and drove over to the area.
When they got there, they found the poodle huddling next to a wall, scared and alone.
Hart carefully approached the terrified animal, who looked at her with big, wide eyes. Hart slowly put out her hand and touched the poodle’s matted fur. Once the poodle realized that Hart wanted to help her, she rolled onto her side and let Hart pet her belly.
Once Hart was sure the poodle trusted her, she picked the animal up and put a leash around her neck. And that’s when the poodle did something amazing.
The poodle started licking Hart’s face, giving her tons of affectionate kisses. It seemed like the poodle was saying thank you for helping her.
Hart was stunned by the poodle’s reaction, and tears pooled in her eyes. This little dog had been through so much, and it was clear all she wanted was for someone to help her.
Hart brought the poodle over to her car and gave her a name: Layla.
Hart and Hagar brought Layla over to a local veterinarian’s office, where they learned some bad news: she had serious damage to her intestines and was in critical condition. Rescue From The Hart shared an update about Layla’s condition on Facebook.

Layla was hospitalized for the next two weeks, recovering from her ordeal. She was weak at first, but she slowly started regaining her strength.
While Layla was in the hospital, Hart found the perfect foster home for her to go to once she was released. Layla’s foster parents began visiting her every day, showering the little dog with love.
Finally, Layla was well enough to be released from the hospital. Her foster parents took her home, where she continued her recovery.
Once Layla was well enough, Rescue From The Hart put her up for adoption. In December 2014, they announced that Layla had found her perfect forever home.
