Not all can foster or adopt a stray dog when we see one.

As much as we want to, our current living conditions may not be best even for a dog in desperate need of a home.

But what’s the best course of action?

A man in St. Louis, Missouri, had this predicament but knew precisely what to do.

The man, who remained anonymous, said that he got off the bus on his way home when he found a dog by the bus stop.

He looked at him and realized he didn’t recognize the dog.

The dog seemed friendly, so he went near, greeted him, and walked home.

To his surprise, the dog followed him to his yard!

It was a stealthy move because he didn’t notice him until he reached home.

He felt pity towards the dog but couldn’t take him as his own, leaving him with no choice but calling the animal shelter for help.

He called the Stray Rescue of St. Louis team so they could take the dog in.

The poor stray was fenced off in his yard, so it won’t run away while waiting for the rescuers.

SRSL Chief Donna Lochmann and her rescue partner, Natalie, went to the man’s home to check on the dog.

Like most rescue situations, Donna and Natalie expected resistance from the dog.

They knew it would take time to gain the dog’s trust and willingly go with them, especially if they had a leash on hand.

But they were surprised at how easy it was for them.

“He was an absolute sweetheart of a dog right off the bat,” Donna told The Dodo. “We were able to leash him up right away, and he went right with us.”

They named him Orville, and he was such a sweetie pie!

He was a stray dog waiting for the right human to save him, even if that human wouldn’t give him a forever home.

Maybe he was only looking for someone to trust, the man who got off the bus.

Animals possess remarkable instincts about humans, though this remains a mystery.

Somehow, they know if they can trust someone and would reciprocate that through their body language.

Dogs lick you, and cats rub themselves on if they like you; you’ll get a bark or hiss if they don’t.

Orville knew immediately that the man and the rest of the SRSL team were people he could trust.

Nobody knew his history – where he came from and how he ended up in the streets of St. Louis.

But all those were not important anymore the moment they saved him and gave him a second chance at a good home.

Donna said that Orville was so happy to be rescued.

She shared that most dogs they brought into the shelter in the past would usually stay in the back seat, but Orville wanted to sit in front beside Natalie.

He also gave the SRSL staff smooches and hugs when he arrived.

They had him checked by the vet, and he was cleared after a few weeks.

It took no time for him to get adopted.

Who wouldn’t fall in love with that sweet face?

Most people might think Orville got lucky he got adopted, but I say his new family is fortunate to have him.
