Shiloh a 2-year-old bloodhound is being credited with saving the lives of three young boys in Magnolia, New Jersey.
Kail and Leo Evans, who are 9 and 7, along with their friend were riding their bikes through the woods.
Though the boys aren’t allowed to leave their block, they did anyway and wandered off into the woods for about three miles.
The boys got lost in the woods and when their grandmother couldn’t find them, she called the police.
The police spotted the kids’ bikes by a creek and started to search for them.
“The whole neighborhood was looking for us,” Leo Evans told WSAZ. “I mean the whole neighborhood.”
Eventually K-9 unit had to be brought in.
“When they said they were getting the dogs, and they needed a piece of their clothing to sniff out, that’s when I think it sunk in,” grandmother Cherese Evans told ABC 6.
The police officers came across some footprints which K-9 officer Shiloh sniffed out. The dog led human officers through three miles of dirt, water, and mud.
“Sometimes water was couple inches, other times it was over our thighs, up to the waist,” Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department Officer Alex Molnar said.
They knew they were getting close when Shiloh began to pull faster. It wasn’t long before the boys were finally found.
“Sure enough, there’s these three kids, and it was like ‘Lord of the Flies,’ all by themselves, in bathing suits, standing in water, and they were planning on surviving the night,” Molnar said.
They had looked up some YouTube videos on how to do it. While it was certainly a team effort the kids see Shiloh as their hero.
“It’s actually mostly Shiloh that found us,” Leo said.
Shiloh was able to track down the boys by smelling their bed sheets.
“They’re trained on human scent,” Molnar said. “We give them a specific scent article, and they’re trained to track that specific human scent.”
Thankfully the boys were only gone for a few hours and were found safe without any injuries.
“I heard they got grounded,” Molnar said.
Grandma was certainly happy that the kids were found and brought home safe.
“They all pulled together, and they found these three kids. These three young kids so we’re exceptionally grateful, she said.
Still, she was upset they went farther than they were supposed to while playing on their bikes.
“No, I didn’t tell them they were grounded until they got home,” Charese Evans said. “Actually, in the car … I was like, just so you know you are confined to the backyard and the house for the rest of the summer.”
Still, the boys said they were very thankful to be found and to everyone that had come out to look for them.
“Thank you. If you guys are watching this, I’m grateful that you guys found us,” Kai said.
