On a cold day in mid-January, residents of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania spotted a dog running around a local park. Some people tried approaching her, but the dog ran away from them.

Many people worried that the dog wouldn’t survive in the frigid weather, so they contacted Janine Guido, founder of local rescue organization Speranza Animal Rescue. Guido quickly drove to the park to look for the dog, who she named Carla.

Carla stayed in the same spot every day, leading Guido to believe she was abandoned there. Even though her family had left her, she was still waiting for them to come back.

Guido tried to get Carla to come into her car, but the skittish pup kept running away from her. Guido tried giving Carla treats, but Carla still ran away.

“On the first and second day I went out I was able to hand-feed her,” Guido told The Dodo. “However, if I went to loop her with the leash she would back up.”

Guido posted an update about Carla on Speranza Animal Rescue’s Facebook page. She included a photo of Carla waiting patiently for her owners who abandoned her.

Soon after this, Carla disappeared for two days, and Guido worried that the dog was lost for good. But then, she received a call telling her that Carla was hiding under a porch. Guido hurried over there and carefully approached Carla. The poor dog got scared again and ran off.

Just a few hours after this, Guido got a call that Carla had been spotted again. She described what happened next to The Dodo:

“I was able to have her follow me on to a porch. And the two other women blocked both entrances, so she could not escape. I leashed her and the rest is history.”

Carla shared the exciting news in a Facebook video.

Guido brought Carla over to the vet, where she learned that the pup was 10 years old and about 10 to 15 pounds underweight. The dog was also exhausted after spending so much time outside, so Guido brought her over to a foster home. Safe and warm, the dog happily went to sleep.

“She’s so sweet, just so scared,” Guido said. “But once she was in my car it was like she knew she was safe.”

Carla is doing very well in her new foster home. She’s enjoying spending time with her new siblings, and she loves her foster mom.
