Fruit is a healthy and delicious snack that packs a mega-dose of vitamins and nutrients, and although fruit is wonderful for us humans – it’s not always the case for our furry friends.
When you’re munching on an apple or a banana, it might be tempting to give your dog a little bit of your snack – after all, you share everything with your dog, right? But the truth is, what is healthy for you – could cause serious health issues or even death in canines.
Here’s a list of some common fruits and whether or not they’re safe for your pup to eat.
This is vital information that every dog owner should know.
Apples
Yes! Who doesn’t love that crunch of a ripe, crisp apple? So delicious! Well don’t fret, you can give your dog a slice as well. Just make sure that they don’t eat the core because a large number of seeds could upset their stomach.
Avocados
Nope. Keep that guacamole and other avocado products away from your pup. This fruit is delicious and healthy for us, but they contain a toxin called persin that is dangerous to dogs which causes diarrhea and vomiting. The pit is also a potential choking hazard.
Bananas
Yes! Bananas are a great source of potassium, manganese, vitamin B6, and other vitamins and minerals. They’re good for your dog too! Just make sure to keep the bananas in moderation as they can cause constipation, and never give your dog the peel.
Blueberries
Go for it. Blueberries are jam-packed with nutrients, antioxidants, and vitamins. They also make a healthy treat for your pup as well. Whether their fresh or frozen, blueberries are just fine for your dogs as long as they don’t have sensitive tummies.
Cherries
Cherries are a big no-no for dogs. Although they are most likely harmless if your dog consumes a cherry or two, large quantities can be deadly. Cherries contain cyanide which is toxic and can cause poisoning in dogs. The pits can also cause intestinal obstruction.
Grapes (and raisins!)
Never. It’s become common knowledge that dogs should stay away from grapes and raisins. Even small amounts of this fruit, whether dried or not, can prove to be fatally toxic for our furry friends.
Kiwi
Yum! If your dog likes its funny texture and furry skin, they’re more than welcome to indulge in a kiwi treat. It’s high in vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. But, of course, everything in moderation – just one kiwi is fine.
Lemons
Sometimes. Although lemons aren’t toxic to dogs, the acid could upset their stomachs and cause vomiting or diarrhea if they have large quantities. If you just want to see their funny reaction to the sour taste, no harm done.
Oranges
Yes! Oranges and tangerines are completely safe for dogs to eat. They do contain a lot of sugar, so like everything else, make sure they only have an orange slice or two – if they eat too many, it could upset their stomach.
Peaches
In moderation. Small pieces of peach flesh are a yummy treat for your dog, they contain a lot of fiber and vitamin A. However, the pit could cause choking and intestinal blockage, so be sure to only give your dog a small cut up piece.
Pineapples
Absolutely! Pineapple is a great treat for your dog because it has a ton of vitamin C and lots of other vitamins and minerals. It’s a nutrient dense treat for both you and your dog – just keep the sharing to a slice or two.
Strawberries
Sure! Dogs can go ahead and enjoy fresh strawberries but be sure to keep the canned or strawberries in syrup out of their diet. Strawberries are wonderful for weight management and their immune system.
Watermelon
Please SHARE this with your friends and family.
Yes and no. Watermelon is a nutritious treat for dogs, however, there are a few things to keep in mind. Seeds should be removed because they can cause intestinal blockage, and don’t let them eat the rind because it can upset their stomach. Other than that, snack away!
