We usually watch movies and documentaries that strongly indicate cats don’t like water. It seems that cats don’t like to take a bath either.
But in this video, we will meet a cat who shares a special affinity with the ocean.
His name is Hokule’a.
Hokule’a was adopted by Alessia & Pat from the Hawaiian Humane Society.
His “hoomans” observed that Hoku started warming up with them after 2 weeks at home. He started to follow them anywhere they went, even in the shower.
He also loves to surf.

Hoku also played in their backyard in the rain and didn’t mind being wet.
His parents got curious.
From there, Alessia and Pat decided to take Hoku to the ocean. They were surprised to find Hoku really loves the ocean, just like them.
The couple didn’t train Hoku to swim or surf but they just saw him confidently and comfortably riding the board when they started to surf.
So Pat made a diamond-shaped little home on the surfboard so Hoku could feel safer on the water.
The Dodo Channel, known for its animal content, shared this story of Hoku’s love of surfing and it garnered 10 million views on Youtube.
Followers couldn’t get enough of Hoku.
Someone even commented: “A cat that can swim and surf. That’s just too cute to handle. Lol”
And we can’t agree more.

According to the couple, they observed Hoku being relaxed and calm whenever he was in the water.
Cats can be water-friendly, too
From an article published by Pet Finder, there are many cat breeds that like to get wet. Cat breeds include the Maine Coon, Turkish Angora, Japanese Bobtail, American Bobtail, Manx, Norwegian Forest Cat, American Shorthair, Turkish Van, and Bengal cats.
But why do some cats love water?

According to Pet Finder, many big cats in the wild will swim or bathe in rivers or lakes to escape the extreme heat in hotter climates.
Domestic cats may prefer warmer interior temperatures and to sit or lie in the sun. In Hoku’s case, he loves swimming in the water and catching waves in the surf.
Hoku also advocates for cleaner oceans
Aside from spreading cuteness around the digital world, Hoku’s Instagram page also advocates for #plasticfreeoceans.
In the Instagram bio of Hokule’a, it says, “We got one planet we need to save!” Very direct advocacy to remind all of us.
Hoku’s followers are not only blessed with a daily dose of cuteness from a surfing cat but also are immersed in inspiration to save our oceans.
For sure, you will love the small family of Hokule’a. Not only for their adventures but also for the mission they embrace every single day.
