One evening, dog groomer Kari Falla was scrolling through Facebook before going to bed. As she scrolled through her newsfeed, she saw a post about a dog that had been found near her home in Oviedo, Florida. The dog’s fur was severely matted and full of fleas. There was also a leash embedded in his fur. The dog needed help right away, and Falla knew she was the perfect person to help him.
Falla told the man who had found the dog that she would open up her salon and groom the dog. At midnight, Falla opened the doors of her salon and began working on the pup.
Falla was shocked when she saw how bad the dog’s mats were:
“They were soaking wet, infested with fleas, full of yeast infection and attached like a mummified cast,” Falla wrote on BGE’s Facebook page. “The smell was horrendous.”
Falla worked through the night, shaving off clump after clump of fur. By the time she finished, she estimates that she had shaved off 20-25 pounds of fur.
Once Falla finished, the dog looked like a whole different animal!
After Falla finished grooming the dog, the man who found him took him to the vet. There, the man learned that the dog was both blind and deaf. It was a miracle that the dog had survived on the streets for as long as he did, and because of that, the man named him Lucky.
This heartwarming story made the local news in Orlando. After the story aired, people began sending donations to Falla’s shop, but she didn’t accept them. Instead, she used the donations to pay for Lucky’s veterinary bills. She told Orlando News 6:
“We always groom rescue dogs and shelter dogs for free, so as soon as I found out, it was a no-brainer,” Falla said. “We believe in paying it forward. Sharing a little bit of kindness goes a long way. And in this case, it saved a life.”
Lucky’s story has a happy ending: the man who found him ended up adopting him! Lucky loves his new dad, and he also enjoys playing with his sister, Chi Chi.

Falla also gets to see Lucky regularly—she offered to groom him for free for the rest of his life. She explained why to Orlando News 6:
“It was a no brainer that we would honor free grooming for Lucky for the rest of his life so he never has to go through that again and humanity doesn’t have to fail him.”
Even after everything he’s gone through, Lucky is still a happy dog who loves everyone he meets. Thanks to Falla and the man who rescued him, Lucky is doing well and looks great!
