Dogs are loyal friends who almost always stay by their owners’ side. When their owners pass away, they are lost and confused. It’s not known if dogs understand death or go through a grieving process, but one family is convinced that their dog understands that his previous owner is gone.
A little dog named Cesur once belong to a man named Mehmet Ilhan.
Mehmet and the dog were very close. Mehmet was paralyzed, and he and the dog had formed a close bond.
When Mehmet went to the hospital, Cesur seemed to sense that something wasn’t right. He became severely depressed and even stopped eating. After Mehmet passed away, his son, Ali, took Cesur to live with him. He explained the relationship his father and the little dog had, saying:
“Because of my father’s paralysis, they had a different kind of connection. When my father was in the hospital during his last days, Cesur stopped eating.”
After Mehmet passed away, Cesur was a different dog.
He has previously been friendly and happy. Without his owner, he was lost, and he wouldn’t let anyone pet him or hold him. He was clearly grieving and just wanted to be left alone. Ali said:
“Nobody could touch him until my father was taken to the grave and was buried.”
After Mehmet was buried, Ali learned that Cesur was leaving his home during the day.
One day, he followed the dog and realized that he was going to visit Mehmet’s grave. He would sit there as if he was waiting for his owner to come back. It was a heartbreaking scene.
Ali said:
“The people who work in the cemetery say the first thing he does in the morning is visit the grave of my father.”
Ali believes that this is the dog’s way to grieving, and he allows him to do it. He also took the dog in and is happy to have such a special animal in his life. He added:
“Cesur has always been a noble animal. He will live with me from now on.”
Cesur isn’t the only dog to miss his deceased owner.
After a man named Miguel Guzman passed away, his family realized that his dog had disappeared. They wondered what had happened to him, but after a while, they finally gave up looking for him. One day, they went to visit Miguel’s grave and got a surprise. Guzman’s wife said:
“Damián started to shout that it was Capitán and the dog came toward us barking as if he were crying. The next Sunday we went to visit Miguel’s grave, and the dog was there. This time he followed us when we returned because we had walked. He stayed with us at home for a while but later went back to the cemetery.”
The family allows the dog to visit the grave each day and are relieved to have found him.
He clearly misses his owner and feels closer to him at his grave. They are amazed by his loyalty.
Dogs and people aren’t the only ones who form close bonds. Sometimes, animals can for unlikely friendships with each other. The loss of an animal friend can be just as devastating as the loss of a human one.
A dog named Barlow bonded with another family pet, a rat name Chippy. The owners were shocked but thought the friendship was adorable. Their owner Liza said:
“Chippy was the only one of the rats who wanted to be as close to Barlow as possible whenever he was in the room. Chippy could nibble on Barlow’s big claws or poke around in his ears and Barlow would just lay there and, quite frankly, seemed to bask in the attention.”
When Chippy passed away, Barlow was devastated.
The family wanted the dog to understand where his friend had gone. They buried the rat near their home and allowed Barlow to be there. Barlow visit’s the rat grave on a regular basis.
Animals may have different ways of dealing with death, but it’s clear that they know when someone they love is no longer living. They are so loyal to their owner and friends that they have a hard time being separated from them. Someday, they will all be reunited.
