This was a lesson recently imparted by a 17-year-old girl named Caitlin Wyanne.
She shared a heart-touching photo of her dog, Harry, sleeping next to the spot where his canine companion, George, used to rest.
George and Harry had a unique arrangement.
They would always spend their time together, curled up in a corner of the room.
George had his own bed, while Harry chose to lie just off to the side.
Harry had a bed of his own, but he often preferred the floor. It was his way of staying close to his best friend.
Tragically, George passed away a little over a year ago.
The family had to make the difficult decision to put him to sleep after he was diagnosed with kidney failure.
Despite the passing of time, Caitlin noticed that Harry still sleeps in the exact same spot, curled up next to where George’s bed used to be.
He even leaves the bed unoccupied, just as he used to when George was alive.
“I’m full on crying rn…he always let George sleep there and he died almost a year ago and he still lies there,” Wyanne shared on Twitter.
Harry understands that the bed doesn’t belong to him.
Out of respect and perhaps a sense of longing, he refuses to occupy it.
It’s clear that he misses his old friend dearly, and who can blame him? Losing a best friend is never easy, for humans or canines.
Dogs are inherently social creatures and thrive in the company of their kind, especially when it’s another pup of the same breed.
Both Harry and George were Lhasa Apsos.
Harry was present during George’s final moments.
“We took Harry to the vets with us when George was put to sleep and stayed next to him the whole time,” Wyanne wrote.
One can only imagine the emotional toll this must have taken on the family.
The relationship between the two dogs was truly remarkable.
“Almost a year on and he clearly still misses George!
He sleeps on the floor to the side of the bed now quite often but I didn’t realize why until I was looking through photos of them both from a year ago and saw the photo I tweeted which made me realize,” Wyanne shared.
Despite the passage of time, Harry hasn’t forgotten the joy he and George shared, whether it was running around the house or taking peaceful naps together.
The image of Harry preserving George’s space is deeply moving, and it seems that Twitter users felt the same.
