This story is a beautiful reminder that every dog is worth saving.
The “adopt, don’t shop” concept has become popular lately, and it is rightfully so because there are thousands of dogs waiting to find their forever homes.
However, many dogs are left overlooked; they’re often the senior dogs or those with special needs.
Mango was a skinny, underweight dog that we could consider would need some special attention.
Blake and Dane never thought twice when they saw Mango’s photo through Grateful Greyhounds.
Formerly named Tigre, Mango was found by Galgos en Familia roaming around a train station in Spain. He was about a year old and severely malnourished.
The couple said yes to it right away. They didn’t even know his personality but wanted to give him a happy home.
The two organizations coordinated his transport with other greyhounds from Spain they were transporting to John F. Kennedy Airport.
After the eight-hour flight, Mango and his new fur parents met for the first time, and they were excited to bring him home.
It took only five minutes for Mango to get used to their house.
He settled in well and always wanted some cuddles and pets.
He loved sleeping for most days of the first month, and it must have been rough for a street dog like him to get used to everything in the house. He didn’t even know how to use the stairs!
But Blake and Dane were patient with him and enrolled him in professional training.
Mango was a fast learner! He learned the basic commands and more. Plus, after a few months, he got used to playing and running around, looking so agile and fit. The one thing that never changed is that Mango is still a huge cuddler.
He also picked up a few cues from humans.
Dane shared that he could sense when someone is not a “dog person” or uncomfortable with dogs. When Mango senses that, he interacts with them less or not at all so the human won’t get intimidated.
However, Mango holds a more profound importance for Blake and Dane.
The couple went through such a difficult year in 2022 – a year they lost five of their grandparents in that span. Mango was there from the start and helped them grieve and process all their emotions.
His emotional radar allowed him to feel what they were going through, put his head on their laps as if to say: “Hey, I’m here for you. I know you’re going through a tough time.”
They got all that love from a dog left wandering on the streets.
Mango’s story of finding his forever home miles across the world proves that our kindness towards dogs and other animals benefits them and us, too.
Despite his initial condition, he was a dog worth saving and deserved to live a better life, like how Blake and Dane provided him.
