Friends are one of the things in life that make it worth living. So, it can be especially devastating when we do lose someone we love.

The best thing we can do is honor their memory and offer final gestures of our love for them.

That’s exactly what a dog named Kaya did when her bestie Gaspar crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Gaspar belonged to Marcelo Rodríguez, and Kaya belonged to Rodríguez’s mother.

“We would get them together on weekends to spend time together,” Rodríguez told The Dodo. “That’s where their friendship began.”

These two couldn’t have been happier when they would play together.

Unfortunately, Gaspar became ill and passed away from kidney failure.

Rodríguez was heartbroken over his loss.

“One Wednesday at 2:19 p.m. you slept in an apartment on the fifth floor listening to music, with great style, just the way you liked it. You taught me countless things without saying a single word. Thank you for your company. You had a very peculiar life int his strange world, and you will always be with us,” Rodríguez wrote in a Facebook post, according to Google Translate.

Since Rodríguez knew how much Gaspar meant to Kaya as well, he decided to give her the chance to bid her best friend farewell.

So, he brought her outside to his backyard where Gaspar was laid to rest.

What happened next shocked everyone. Kaya laid down directly on top of the fresh grave and looked exceedingly sad during her final farewell to her friend. And she wasn’t about to budge.

“That’s when she spent the whole morning on top of his grave,” Rodríguez said.

Rodríguez took a picture and posted it on his Twitter.

“Yesterday we buried our dog in the yard of mom’s house. Gaspar was a unique companion who taught us all a lot. This is Kaya, her friend, who now does not come out of her grave,” the Tweet says, according to Google Translate.

So many people were overwhelmed by Kaya’s act of love that Rodríguez’s Tweet ended up going viral.

It was retweeted more than 16,000 times and liked more than 162,500 times.

“I didn’t want to cry today,” wrote one commenter with several tearful emojis.

According to VCA Hospitals, dogs mourn the loss of their loved ones just like humans do.

“When a dog loses a companion, two- or four-legged, he grieves and reacts to the changes in his life. Dogs alter their behavior when they mourn, much like people do: They may become depressed and listless. They may have a decreased appetite and decline to play,” the website states.

It’s important to spend more time with your dog when they are grieving and to be more affectionate. It will help them to recover more quickly.

Many people were touched by Kaya’s loving tribute and how strong their love was.

“Animals are superior beings that we will never understand, and that we do not deserve,” Rodríguez wrote.
