The aptly-named Emmit Thunderpaws was so happy when his dad walked through the door.

Emmitt Thunderpaws, this majestic Great Dane, could just sense that this day would be a special one. Somehow, maybe doggie intuition, he just knew that if he stared out this window long enough, his special person was going to return to him.

Today’s the day.

As the dog comes bounding down the stairs and prancing around the front door, you can literally feel his excitement mounting. He is so confident that today is the day! He can just smell it in the air.

And then he sees him

After waiting 9 long months, he’s back! This Great Dane goes flying out the door and cannot wait to jump up and pour affection out on his owner.

Display of affection.

After being separated for these 9 long months, this dog and owner cannot resist showing each other some love and affection. Watching how happy these two are when they are reunited will really tug at your heartstrings. I’m pretty sure any sense of limiting displays of affection would be out the door for just about anyone in this situation — person or animal.

“I’m not letting you get away from me again.”

After the original greeting, each time Emmitt’s owner tries to take a step, this Great Dane seems to have to remind him that there is no way he is letting him out of his sight again!

One big doggie.

When you see this Great Dane standing up and giving his soldier his homecoming welcome, you can’t help but be shocked at just how big this dog is.

Great Danes are the tallest dogs in the world according to the American Kennel Club. When Emmitt Thunderpaws is standing on his hind legs when he’s hugging his human, he is standing at about 7 feet tall!

Male Great Danes generally stand at about 32″ tall, to their shoulders, and weigh, on average, 175 pounds. These are some big dogs!

Gentle Giants.

Great Danes may be big, but they are not scary at all. These dogs are some of the sweetest, gentlest, most affectionate dogs around. Great Danes also love people and form very strong bonds with their owners.

Having been bred to hunt, Great Danes also have an amazing sense of smell. This loyalty and amazing sense of smell are most likely how Emmitt Thunderpaws could “sense” his owner returning home today. He really did smell it in the air.

Famous Great Danes.

Not sure you know of any Great Danes? I bet you’ll be surprised! Astro, the dog in “The Jetsons” was a Great Dane! Astro was George Jetson’s best friend and helped to keep Elroy from getting into too much mischief.

Not sure Astro, “The Jetsons” dog is one you’re familiar with? How about this?

Scooby-Doo!

Scooby-Doo is probably the most famous Great Dane of all time. Although fictional, Scooby does embrace some very typical Great Dane traits. Namely, loyalty to his owner and a HUGE appetite.

I’m pretty sure that Scooby-Doo would treat Shaggy to this same royal treatment if he were to disappear and return over 9 months later!
