Dogs are famously curious creatures. Sometimes, this curiosity can lead to funny or surprising incidents.
The story of a Great Dane who accidentally broke into his own home is the perfect example of this.
An 18-year-old man who was alone at his house in Sonoma, California called 911 when his dogs began barking hysterically, essentially warning him that something was wrong.
He feared there was an intruder after hearing noises coming from inside his home, so he took his pets with him to a safe hiding spot.
When law enforcement arrived, they found the man hiding with his pets, terrified. They searched the interior and exterior of the home, and after a few minutes, they found the so-called “intruder.”
“One of the deputies outside the house heard this scratching noise,” said Spencer Crum of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department. “He shined his light around the house and saw this dog sticking his head out a skylight on the roof. The deputy said — and I quote — ‘At that point we ditched all tactics and died laughing.'”
The culprit was none other than the panicked man’s Great Dane, whom the man had forgotten to bring to his hiding spot.
The curious dog had found his way upstairs, and being the giant dog he is, he stood on his hind legs and poked his head out of the skylight on the roof.
Crum explained that the smaller dogs had been barking because they weren’t able to climb upstairs with their larger companion.
Fortunately for all, there was no real criminal, and the police officers were able to get a good laugh out of the bizarre situation.
“I’ve done this job for 25 years, and there’s been a lot of strange calls,” said Crum. “A dog mistaken for an intruder in his own home? That’s pretty abnormal.”
The Sonoma Police Department jokingly wrote about their incident on their Facebook page:
“The Deputies conducted a thorough investigation and determined the culprit had been a ‘bad dog’ so he got no treats,” they said.
We’re so glad that everyone was safe and that it ended up simply being a funny incident. We’re sure the Great Dane’s owner will be telling this story for years.
