Shelby Hennick loves her grandma Donna more than anything in the world.
In June 2017, 79-year-old Donna had to be hospitalized after she had a bad reaction to some medication. Shelby was worried about her, and she was even more worried when she learned Donna’s beloved dog Patsy wouldn’t be able to visit her.
Donna has had 13-year-old Patsy since he was a puppy, and she bottle-fed him as a newborn. He was so small, he could fit in the palm of her hand. Even though Patsy is all grown up now, he’s still tiny. He’s a true lap dog, and Donna treats him like her baby!
Donna and Patsy have always been inseparable—she’d never spent more than a day away from him. And so, Donna missed her little pup terribly when she was in the hospital.
Shelby saw how much Donna missed Patsy, and she could also tell that Patsy missed his mom. Shelby knew she needed to reunite them.
Shelby told Inside Edition that dogs were actually allowed in the hospital if they have papers saying they’re up-to-date on their shots. Shelby, who’s a vet tech, didn’t have these papers on hand, and she didn’t have time to get them.
“It was just so spur of the moment and I didn’t have time to go to my grandma’s veterinarian’s office,” said Hennick.
And so, Shelby came up with another plan to get Patsy into the hospital. She wrapped him in a blanket and pretended he was her ‘baby.’
Shelby walked into the hospital holding Patsy under a blanket. Nobody stopped her—they all thought Patsy was a real baby!
“Nobody would have stopped me to see my baby,” Shelby laughed. “The worst they could have told me was to leave.”
When Shelby arrived at Donna’s room, she revealed who was under her blanket. Donna was shocked and thrilled. She was so happy to be reunited with her pup!
Shelby was amazed to see how quickly Donna’s mood improved when Patsy was with her. She felt more relaxed with Patsy by her side, and she recovered quicker. In fact, the day after Shelby brought Patsy to the hospital, Donna was sent home!
“She wasn’t feeling very good and [Patsy] made her more relaxed,” Shelby said. “She did go home the next day. Medically, it didn’t have anything to do with Patsy, but I’m still thinking it had a little bit to do with her.”
After Donna was sent home, Shelby shared photos of Patsy dressed up as a baby on her Twitter page. The Tweet quickly went viral, receiving more than 500,000 likes and over 125,000 retweets. Everyone was amazed by Shelby’s clever plan!
My grandma is in the hospital right now and wanted to see her dog. So I made it look like I was carrying a baby and we made it 😂❤ pic.twitter.com/oKxNBlJEEL
