Mothers will always be mothers regardless of the species – may it be an animal or a human.

Despite not possessing human intelligence, animals also care about their little ones. Behind their intimidating physique, sharp teeth, and furry bodies, they can still be mothers to their children. They can also be loving to the ones they care about the most.

Being a mother is something that even we, humans can’t take away from them.

When mom meets another mom.

It may be common to most of us, however, this is not the usual mother “encounter” that you have in mind. This time, it’s different because we are talking about a human mom and an animal mom – a gorilla to be specific.

Just recently, Emmelina Austin together with her husband Michael and their 1-month-old baby Canyon visited the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston. But what they thought at first was a typical zoo wandering day for them made an unexpected turn.

A wild but beautiful encounter.

In a YouTube video posted on Michael Austin’s channel, Emmelina is carrying Canyon and they are just inches away from the gorilla enclosure.

On the other side of the glass is a gorilla mom named Kiki and her own child, a 7-month-old baby gorilla named Pablo.

What’s captivating in the video is the way the gorilla mom is looking at Emmelina’s child.

It’s full of curiosity but you can clearly see that the sight of the tiny human child is mesmerizing her.

She is doing some hand gestures we wish we could understand. One thing is for sure though, she can totally relate to the feeling of having a newborn child.

Nobody seems to have the ability to understand what the gorilla mom is trying to say, except for one person.

Emmelina and Kiki may be from entirely different species, but that is not an issue for the former to understand the latter because they somehow speak the same “language”.

The head of the Austin family, Michael, told The Dodo:

“[Kiki] was talking to us with her hands. Pablo even pushed his face up to the glass at one point and they watched him, noses touching, together. My wife and I both had tears in our eyes.”

“My wife mentioned that she felt like she could understand their bond and could see how much she cared for Pablo, since she is a mother now herself.”

For a couple of minutes, the two loving moms share a touching moment together, then the gorilla mom decides to do something.

“My wife held up our son to show to Kiki, who was on the other side of the enclosure … then Kiki grabbed Pablo and put him on her leg to carry him over to us.”

Canyon sure is too young to appreciate that rare moment but it’s something their family will forever cherish.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences. Such an incredible memory to share with our son someday!”

Someone becomes a mother not only because she’s given birth to a child. It is more like a role and the feeling of caring for someone dear to your heart. It is giving unconditional and selfless love to a very important person.

And we’re certain these two moms can relate to those feelings.
